how does a team gain the 'hammer' in curling, i'm confused! :)

Scrivens, I understand that part, but how does a team win the hammer.

But the hammer is NOT played alternately, thats the confusing part

As that link gives:- If only one point is possible, the skip will often try to avoid scoring at all in order to retain the hammer until the next end, when two or more points may lie i.e. the end can be deliberately voided by all stones being knocked out of the target using the last stone of the end.
