Of course we have lots of fab athletes going to the Winter Games.

But our spiritual figurehead ... is Chemmy.

A bit of a bug bear of mine is that the British Olympic authorities will spend £Bn's (literally) hosting the Games, but won't even divvy up to send our team to Sochi. I mean, what the f***!

So, while teams from other countries are concentrating on training, Chemmy is concentrating on raising enough money from donations and sponsorship to pay for her travel, hotel rooms, nutrition, etc.

I made a donation, so maybe Chemmy will have an AnswerBank sponsorship logo on her ski suit. And if anyone wants to go to the Games, you can stay in the AB sponsored bedroom. But you'll have to share with Chemmy and me. Sorry.

Anyway, that's my morning rant. All the billions that we throw at sports ... we should be paying for our Winter Games stars to go to Sochi.

Yours,
Annoyed

shoota, I know, I know, I can see the financial aspect.

But look how much our sports authorities spend to finance glorious sporting achievements like:

Australia Test team 5-0 England Test team

Australia One Day team 3-0 England One Day team

England football team 0-1 Frankly, anyone else in the world

I wonder if our embarrassingly bad cricketers paid for their own flights to Australia?

I was born in 1966. If you stacked up our national football achievements in my lifetime (NONE) against our winter sports achievements (LOTS) ... and then asked

which of the two brings glory to GB? ... winter sports

which are we actually any good at? ... winter sports

which has the most potential for future success? ... winter sports

so where shall we focus our funding? ... err, football?

With you 100% there JJ.
Is she in the team for Sochi definitely now?
OK just found an article that says she is.
JJ - if you were born in 1966, that was the year that England won the World Cup at football.......

What month was it, Boxy?

I was born in September.

Hang on, I'll look it up ...
Question Author
July ... *phew!*
It'll be June, i think, JJ, in which case you are right - I remember dashing down to the Post office to buy the England Winners stamps!

I don't know much about the winter games, not my bag, but I was surprised to see on TV yesterday how much further south it is from us (given all that snow and coldness). Good old Gulf Stream!
^ I was nearly right :-)

shoota ...

Did you find also that she's been training with the Norwegian team? They charge her £50,000 a year. She pays it herself.

That's a year's fundraising for Chemmy, or about three days' wages for our top footballers.

Boxy ... by the time the Games start, AB will be an informative source of reference for the Winter Games.

Or it might just be me having a whinge about lack of funding.

It's just ... just ... THAT moment, in 2010 ...

When Amy Williams beat Melissa Hollingsworth in Vancouver ...

OMG ... just one moment like that, and it will all be worthwhile.
I did see the Norwegian training arrangements JJ and I really admire her dedication and commitment.
There doesn't seem to be a site where one might make a small contribution - do you know of one?

Oh, I meant to say ...

Wednesday is the big day ... the announcement of the final team ...

Team GB for Sochi 2014 !

Of course, AnswerBank will be at the forefront, with the News as it breaks.

Fingers crossed for preople like Ellie Koyander (Moguls), Emily Sarsfield (Ski Cross), Dave Ryding (Slalom), Dougie Crawford (Super Combined), Aimee Fuller (Snowboard), etc, etc.

Hoping, hoping, hoping ...
seriously,,,,,,just how many medals do you think team GB will get ?
Sad there isn't any netball :-(
Question Author
Our winter sports team will win more medals next month than our football team have won in forty years.
'' our football team '' ?
Question Author
Don't worry, shoota. There's Netball, too ...
