Well for me he is and with his retirement from Olympic competition almost certain, with a final farewell at the Commonwealth Games he will be sadly missed,as will Victoria Pemberton.Fear not, however, the future is in good hands with Laura Trott and Jason Kelly.
Thank you Chris and Victoria for the memories, the tears and the feelings of pride at being British.

Amen to that! Lord Chris Hoy...surely! And Dame Victoria Pendleton...what a great example to our youngsters. Especially Laura Trott who overcame asthma. Proud to be a Brit!!! I certainly am.
I agree to the accolades as to being one of the greats and what he has achieved - and the team at large.

The greatest though - questionable - how about Ben Ainslie who only gets to compete in one event per Olympics - a silver at 16 and now 4 golds added.

Personally, I don't think we know or should know at this time - it should be based on the legacy and commitment they make to their sport and coaching/motivating (as per Coe and Redgrave). IOC member for Coe and perhaps the future President?
chris hoy.................... well done ! ( hes scottish ) :) :)
Greatest in his own sport maybe
I don't agree.
DT makes a good point.

Who is Victoria Pemberton ?
Really nice man too - he seems so modest in his victory, and so well deserved! Well done Chris ..........

MT...pegantic....
Was that a deliberate foe pass ?
Not forgetting the superb British technology behind these stars.
Why not just revel in the knowledge that we have so many great sportspeople?
I met him and his Mum when I sold his Mum her outfit for his MBE and her MBE. She is a lovely woman and he is a very nice guy .I think he is amazing and he has impressed me so much at these Olympics, as have the whole GB team. I think he will be missed, so will Victoria. They have inspired many young cyclists which can only be a good thing. I hope I can get tickets for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow to see his farewell.
Seadogg , I am sure that most of uswho lovesport are aware of the crucial input from the backroom personnel. The athletes are alwayys quick to praise them, as it should be.
Sure they do Donna. There was an article in the Independent by Chris Boardman about the outstanding support our cycling team has had. Of course Sir Chris et al are the best
