here is the original, so you can compare:

The Hellenic National Anthem Composed: --Dionysios Solomos, 1824 Translation in English by Rudyard Kipling in 1918

We knew thee of old,
Oh, divinely restored,
By the lights of thine eyes
And the light of thy Sword

From the graves of our slain
Shall thy valour prevail
As we greet thee again-
Hail, Liberty! Hail!

Long time didst thou dwell
Mid the peoples that mourn,
Awaiting some voice
That should bid thee return.

Ah, slow broke that day
And no man dared call,
For the shadow of tyranny
Lay over all:

And we saw thee sad-eyed,
The tears on thy cheeks
While thy raiment was dyed
In the blood of the Greeks.

Yet, behold now thy sons
With impetuous breath
Go forth to the fight
Seeking Freedom or Death.

From the graves of our slain
Shall thy valour prevail
As we greet thee again-
Hail, Liberty! Hail!
Maybe whether or not you mouth/ sing to the national anthem is joelukes version of "The Tebbit Test"?

Silent Night I think, Sloopy.
Silent night, Holy night
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon joeluke ever so wild
Mo Farrar so tender and mild
Sleep in Heavenly peace
Sleep in Heavenly peace

Silent night, Holy night
ABers quake at the sight
Stories stream from Devon afar
AB choirs sing Hallelujah
Ed, joeluke will be forlorn
Ed, joeluke will be forlorn

Silent night, Holy night
Mo Farrer, sports pure light
Radiant beams from thy winner's face
With the dawn of joeluke's grace
Jesus, Mo, in your mirth
Sing next time at thy golden brace
Sing next time at thy golden brace
DT. Excelled yourself! Fantastic! xxx
Yep, excellent as usual DT.
When did it become a necessity for participants in sporting events to sing the National Anthem? It is a relatively recent change - watch Olympic medal ceremonies from most of the 20th Century and you will see recipients standing in respectful silence (except perhaps for a whistling Daley Thompson in 1984).

In fact we (spectators) are still requested to stand for National Anthems, not to sing, just as British cinema-goers were expected to back in the 1940s, 50s & 60s.
Difficult to sing when you are trying not to cry, overcome with the emotion of having become OLYMPIC CHAMPION. Leave Mo alone. He deserves better from you.
joeluke = non athletic, overweight, mysoginist, achieve bugger all UKIP supporter.
Crafty...worrying I know, but I think I`m falling in love with you. x
Saw Andy Murray singing the national anthem up until "long may she reign over us" then he stopped - taking nothing away from Andy's fantastic win - the boy did well.
I'm in love crafty - get yer tights on :+)
That`s one Crafty post I will never forget Dave! :-)
Blimey, what kind of 'patriot' requires anybody to actually sing the national anthem? What's wrong with respectful silence? They played it before the Prom last night, because a member of the Royal family was present, and nobody I heard sang the words. None of us had recently run 10,000 metres ! Everyone stood up, though. And I don't recall people in cinemas singing it (those that weren't making a run for the door that is; such patriotism in the old days!)
I think the pride with which Mo carried the Union Jack shows his allegiance
Do the winners from other nations sing their NA? I agree with an earlier post, it's only become an issue in the last couple of games. The South African one puzzled me, it seemed to be two different ones, it was certainly very long.
Seems to vary from team to team and individual to individual, whether the country's anthem is sung. The Dutch hockey team all sang theirs. Their may be a directive to them. It looks messy if some sing and some don't.

As a side note, Spain has no words to its anthem, apparently because, post-Franco, they wanted a new anthem but nobody could agree on words for any of the tunes suggested. A result is that dissenting minority groups sing their own words during the wordless playing, to the annoyance of the government, which is relieved that no such impertinence has occurred during the Games. Spain should have chosen 'Viva ,Espana!'; we all know the tune, the British could join in with the English words, and surely nobody could argue about the message.
^their may be a directive^ ? 'there may be...' ^
