Wow, you certainly picked a difficult place to get to from Dublin!

Actually, its not that bad.

Ryanair - Dublin to Gatwick - 1Hour 15mins
Southern Trains - Gatwick to Portsmouth - 1Hour 40 Mins
Wightlink - Portsmouth to Ryde - 15 mins

you can fly to southampton from dublin, have a look here http://www.cheapflights.co.uk/flights/Southampton/Dublin/
find out the best way by checking www.traveline.org.uk

GALAXY has the best idea, its cheapest that way. But as an alternative. You can go, as FUNKYCHICKEN suggests, to Southampton then sail from there directly to hte isle of wight. beware though, the public transport on the island istn't very good!

I'm trying to do almost the same journey in reverse (Portsmouth to Dublin) and we discovered that to flyfrom Scumhampton to Dublin cost approx 280 for two people return, whereas from Gatwick at the same time it costs about 70. Also, so i've heard, The Solent (the water between Portsmouth and the Isle Of Wight) is the most expensive bit of water to cross in the country as its only a couple of miles or so and costs a few pounds each way. I dont know how much it is exactly though, rarely need to go ovre there!

Might be too late to help you, but i've picked up flights with Ryanair from Gatwick - Dublin return for 2 people at 89. We plan to get the train from Portsmouth to Gatwick, although it might be worth checking out Megatrain.com (i think thats the address, but google will confirm), theydo train journeys from portsmouth "the hard" to london waterloo for 1/2 if you're going for an off peak time.
