so ... why the early start?

this may seem like an odd question.

the opening ceremony of the olympics is friday evening.

so, why do some of the events start before then?
eg. womens football today.

i do know that it is not unique to these games, it has happened before
I think it's odd too, I can only assume that they can't fit in the schedule otherwise.
The football always starts early. The tournament would otherwise be concertinaed into an uncomfortably short time. The Olympics therefore start in Wales!
................and then Scotland I believe?
Remember the "main" Olympics only actually lasts 17 days from opening ceremony to the closing ceremony (though you would think it longer the money that has been spent on it and the publicity it is getting).

Very hard to fit a full football competition in to 17 days (or less if you want to finish it before the closing ceremony)

First match kicks off in Wales at 4pm.

Then the next matches are in Coventry and Scotland at 5pm.
Am now seriously thinking of going to the girlies games. SFA have a deal where, with a £40 ticket, you can add hositality for £2. At £42, that's £21 per game and all the beer I can drink. Not to mention a half-time pie and hot drink? Off to phone the SFA...................
