New rules for next season
OK these may not be exactly new, but they would improve the game no end.
1. ONLY the Captain can talk to the referee. ANYONE else approaching him under any circumstances will get an AUTOMATIC yellow card at the minimum.
2. The amount of time wasted when the ball is not in actual play is incredible, so whenever play is stopped then so is the time, as in rugby and there will be NO INJURY TIME so when 45 minutes is up then the game is over unless the ball is still actually in play. To this end the game-time is taken out of the referee's control and is on display at the ground for all to see, with the time counting down from 45 minutes to zero.
3. Isn't it about time that football went metric as in a lot of other sports? This would mean that goalmouth would be a bit bigger and should lead to more goals. I have thought this for a while actually as the size of the goals haven't changed since the game began and the average height of players has grown a lot since the late 1800's.

I partially agree with 1. However, I would also include the player involved in the incident as well, it is fair that he should be able to communicate with the ref. But no others, and definitely no Drogba, Ballack nonsense.

1. I would have red cards carry to the next game between the teams playing. It does not make sense that a player is banned from proceeding fixtures giving another team an advantage for no reason.
1. Ban all ex-Scottish footballers from TV punditry and ban Andy Gray from every league ground.

I know people have been down this road before. But what about an action replay for dubious decisions? Then things like the Chelsea Barca fiasco & The Man U penalty (That never was against spurs the other week). Surley it would make the game much better & you wouldn't have Refs having death threats etc etc

With osprey's question 1, this was introduced a while back and that is when the captains' started wearing armbands that say "Captain". As with a lot of things it doesn't seem to have been adhered to.
Concerning video technology, at which level would it start and finish? Would it just be the Premier League or would Football League clubs have to purchase the technology? Would it be a pre-requisite for Conference sides to enter the Football League, remembering that their grounds have to be up to scratch by the Christmas before?
Would the technology be used in the FA Cup? Would non-league teams have to invest?
Concerning video technology, at which level would it start and finish? Would it just be the Premier League or would Football League clubs have to purchase the technology? Would it be a pre-requisite for Conference sides to enter the Football League, remembering that their grounds have to be up to scratch by the Christmas before?
Would the technology be used in the FA Cup? Would non-league teams have to invest?
Don't agree with you at all OSPREY on any of the points you raise. Football is a relatively simple game, complicated only by those who try and mess about with the structure of it. There should be only one Governing Body for Football in this Country; the FA and FL should merge.
The Offside Law should be looked at closely as at the moment it is lacking in interpretation i.e Players Offside but deemed not interfering with Play. It is confusing !!
The Stakes are so high now, Sportsmanship has taken a backseat as it is win at all costs. We have the Professional Penalty divers who ought to be in Holywood instead. Referees are getting conned a lot of the time, so much so that some genuine Penalties are now not being given because of the doubt that is put into the Referees minds !!
Goal Line Technology should be introduced and a 4th Official should be consulted when controversial decisions are made, and there have been many of them each and every Season.
There should always be injury time especially when play is held up due to serious injury which happens often.
Controversially, I think Play-Offs should be scrapped altogether. If you cannot escape relegation or gain Promotion over the course of the whole season, then it is tough luck. Try again next Season.
Football is more of a business these days and greed is good as far as many Clubs are concerned. Money is everything as it brings Power and buys success.
Wealthy Clubs can afford to buy any Player and Mickey Mouse could manage them as the best Managers are those who won Trophies on a shoestring budget.

1. agree. Got to get back to basics - this Respect code brought in at the begining of the season is not working. Get the ref to talk to captains of each side - then leave it to the captain to repremand his players - simple and effective. agree Automatic yellow for players approaching ref - but refs need to be stronger (instead of trying to be friends with players - which happens to be too often.
2. NO this is the last thing I want to see! The refs in charge of the game - hes got the watch and yes if theres any time wasting, ball out of play, etc he can add the time on (perhaps in consultation with the fourth official).
3. People have been talking about widening goal mouths for years. I agree that for more goals (and thats what all fans want to see) it would be a good idea. How many times do we see the post or bar hit in one game (2/3 times a game - those shots coould be transferred into goals).
Time outs - no thanks - the manager takes all week to explain his tactics - let his captain work out what to do on the pitch.
Gromet - your idea of red card transfer is good - what if its the second time the teams have met? carry red forward to next season ...Ummm.. could work!
Action replays - No. What if the officials dont agree after viewing them?
present Offside law - complecated now, but the real fans (and the players) know when their offside.
Playoffs - best part of the season
My main concern is that the game is now a non contact sport, and the art of defending has vanished from our game.
Steve - no one has worried about the fans since football was introduced.
By the way Steve - Cricket - TV technology - now theres a game where you dont need umpires - only joking!
