Why do Man Utd persist in playing Chris Smalling and Phil Jones out of position?

They were once feted as the future Utd (and England) central defensive partnership yet Moyes (like Ferguson) continually plays Smalling as a full-back (which he plainly isn't) and Jones as a midfielder (which he plainly isn't).

If they were good enough to be Utd's central defensive partnership they would be regularly playing there together now as Ferdinand and Vidic are both well past their best and should be being used as back-up only.

Truth is Fergie signed Smalling and Jones as the future of Man Utd and it turns out they plainly aren't

Perhaps Moyes plainly isn't a good manager !

He's a good manager but this job always was going to be too big for him and anyone following Fergie on a hiding to nothing
If nothing much happens on transfers this summer that's where those two might be playing next season.

My eyes have just glazed over thinking about last nights game, so not going to read the other thread.
