i agree, what she gets up to in her private life is immaterial!
If it had been the Telegraph had announced that, I would have said they were trying to distract attention away from the fact she was a Tory.
Why the Guardian did it I don't know.
presumably because this was unusual, and hence it was what is often called "news".
Surely they were simply following what the world's press did when they announced that the USA had elected a black president? i.e. the references to race and to sexuality, in each case, celebrate the fact that old prejudices are being cast aside. So, for once. the press are announcing some good news; it seem hard to criticise them for that!
Because The Grauniad' is a left-leaning paper and is probably seeking to cause harm to the Tory cause. As if that needed any help in Scotland.
Well the Daily Wail ran with this headlie;

http://www.dailymail....-leader--MSP-May.html

What's the difference?
matters not a jot if she is good at her job.
I could start by saying "It would have come out anyway!"

No, it is irrelevant, it is more about her intelligence, leadership and organisation as they desperately need it North of Hadrians - as do the Labour party, otherwise Mr Salmond will continue to run rampant over them.
Bo!!ox DT it's about cameron looking for the pink vote.
I don't know if the OP is suggesting that the Guardian has "outed" her, but it hasn't; it describes her as "openly gay".

The Tories knew and weren't worried by it. Scottish voters may well be more upset if they see her as imposed on them by London, rather than by her sexuality.
good word, jack - "headlie"
The Scots are all Pinkies, me thinks not, missnemesis!

There could be an element of the gay/lesbian/transgender appeal re the UK as a whole and that he is for "integration" which, actually, I think he is. Others in the party maybe not.
How very Freudian of me........! :o)
Jack - love the Mail's story

I think it's a great sign of how far the Tories have come that they're ready to place their faith in someone who is openly a kickboxer!
The fact she is a lesbian is neither here nor there however, the fact she is a tory is quite another matter ;-)
I loved your terminology, missnem, by the way, especially in a thread about lesbianism (and politics).....has me rolling on the floor with laughter.
they are going for the kick-ass vote, jake
I was just about to remark that the Daily Mail would not, of course, ever have mentioned any such thing when I read the following take in that paper:

"The new face of the Tories: Lesbian kickboxer, 32"

Good old DM - never fails to disappoint. So the question is now to the questioner: "Why does the Daily Mail feel the need to announce ....."

Do you know the answer?

Why did the Guardian find the need to announce that she was gay?
