The put down of intelligence and use of the mind in any way is so woven throughout the New Testament that one must finally conclude that people should strive to be stupid and unquestioning, and that those who are not are doomed.

"For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent." I Cor 1:19

"It pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe." I Cor 1:21

Slavish adherence to faith makes you bigoted as well.

If we accept that there is a God (Which I don't) we still don't know which way said deity want to be worshipped. I always love the way that christians laugh at faiths that believe there is a god of the sun, moon etc and call them ignorant heathens.

So immediatly these people get out of bed they think I am right you are wrong and no argument shifts that.

As Gaza proves, among to many others.

Bigotry is ignorance of the worse kind.
Naomi as usual you are trying to change the meanings. I wish you had read that link yourself with a view of a woman. What I meant was very clear that why women would be unclean double the amount of time if they gave birth to a girl. More or less Octavius clarified that. Why are there cultural things in bible, that is another debate.

What you are referring is a different subject and has to do with womens right. Obviously when you are going through your monthly menstruation, you would not feel like having sex, do you? So men are advised to leave women alone. They might be feeling weak, emotionally a bit down, other words give them time, even women are excused from compulsory 5 times prayer during that. So that is taken in good sense, when you do care for your wife.

I am sure seeking medical attention is understood and is a common factor so no one has to write about it. And I know why you are implying that, so let me refresh your memory yet once again that Islam does not forbid from seeking medical attention.
Not at all, Keyplus. I don't try to change meanings - and I understood your question and Octavius answer perfectly well. The point I was making is that its ludicrous to question one religion, when your own follows a similar example. I find it highly offensive that women when menstruating, or after having given birth, are considered unclean, and I dont believe these rules are designed out of consideration for women. Unclean is hardly a term of respect - and a menstruating woman should be allowed to do whatever she wants to do. It should be her choice - but it isnt. Men make the rules, and women obey the rules.

I am aware that Islam does not forbid people from seeking medical help, but I think its very unwise to depend upon the advice of people who are medically unqualified, which, it seems, many do. I was reading an Islamic questions and answers website where one woman had been given very sensible guidance by her midwife. Nevertheless, the woman asked the imam whether or not she was allowed by the religion to take that advice - and thats not only ignorant - its incredibly stupid and potentially highly dangerous.
Hmm, my qualities as a Christian are evolving, in the view of the opinions given on this thread. Not only am I ignorant and intolerant, I'm also a bigot.

Any more qualities to add to my repertoire?
You like Mariah Carey.
All argument is stupid.

If the existence of God, the resurrection of Christ, could be proven, then the whole object would be self-defeating. Don't any of you endlessly squabbling ninnies see that?

It is totally necessary that it remain slightly shrouded.

And yes I am completely blinkered and ignorant etc etc, save you the bother of calling me it.

Waldo, I actually find that quite offensive. You can call me a deluded religious racist homophobic intellectually challenged bigot if you think I am one, but please refrain from other abuses.

Yeah Waldo, ya big meanie. Leave Octavius alone! The only people that can be abused answering my questions are ones with "Ginger Hair!"

Ye it is written in the book of MWB, that all answerers be beholden unto MWB in that they shall not smite those who listen to pop music but will, in a great fury, smite all those who have ginger hair. For they be the cursed ones in MWBs threads. Amen.
Pah! How intolerant!! I'm ginger - and I sing like Mariah Carey!

Haaaa!! Only joking!!
There is nothing similar in two examples Naomi and you just cant see the difference. Your tiny brain has got stuck on word unclean. If you do not like that word then choose another of your choice but one thing is very clear that when woman is going through menstruation then she is different physically, emotionally.

You can't just understand that God is asking men (husbands) to be nice to women and not be too demanding when they are in that condition. And that simple thing you are making as dictation to a woman. Quran is not speaking about one woman but in general. May be you have no idea how women were treated at that time and still every where in the world, Next time when anyone gives you a preferential treatment for being woman, then just refuse to accept it. And that is the reason a person like me who used to tell others to give their seat to an elderly, pregnant, or with young kids as it is even marked in buses and train, almost gave that up due to one woman who started shouting at me. "Do you think I am too old to stand, how dare you are asking me to sit, do you think I am not fit enough". But whenever I have a chance I do not give up on giving up for the sake of humanity.

I think naomi24 protests too much!

I can actually see, (in my minds eye), that you are indeed a ginga, & I have, (in my head), heard you sing like Mariah. And, to boot, I can feel, (in my feelers), that you dance like Carlton from "Fresh Prince of Bel Air".

Now, whilst I can't prove this to be true, no-one can dis-prove it.

Rather like religion.
Keyplus, Woman hold major positions of power in the world these days, so what makes the men of Islam think a woman is incapable of attending a mosque just because she's menstruating? The answer is because the antiquated ideas of Islam deem her 'unclean'. It's as simple as that.

As for giving up your seat, good manners is one thing, but it's altogether a different thing when men make totally ridiculous rules that women must abide by.

There's no need to be rude either. You only wish I had a tiny brain! That would suit you just fine, but sorry - can't oblige. The fact is that men have made the rules, and women have to abide by them, and if your arguments and your religion don't stand up to scrutiny, it's your problem. You're the one who believes and condones such utter, ignorant nonsense.
Islam has its own system and the rights for women. And I am sure those are quite practical. Why don't you ask Olympic society to let women run in 100 meter and others along with men. Is that a discrimination against women as well.
Drat, MWB, dastardly deeds are afoot! It seems my secret is out! Ha! But will anyone believe it? Maybe I should write a book? Mmm ... now there's an idea.
No, it isn't discrimation, Keyplus. You're sure the Islamic system is practical because you're a man, but I wonder if you'd still be happy with it if you were an intelligent woman forced to obey antiquated and totally unncessary laws? I doubt it very much. I'm not denying that men and women are different - they are - and vive le difference I say - but that difference does not mean that one is inferior to the other - nor does it mean that one is less intelligent, or less worthy, than the other.
Should have been discrimination. Keyboard's sticking.
bigot n : a prejudiced person who is intolerant of any opinions differing from his own.

If the cap fits wear it
Naomi, the rules apply to both men and women, but of course the biology of women is different. This cant be avoided. Of course these are the rules set down by Islam, you do not belong to the club, therefore do not have to abide by them.

In partial ablution (Wudu) it is necessary to wash the parts of the body which are generally exposed to dirt or dust or smog everyone must be in good shape and pure condition. Any natural discharge, urine, stools, gas, vomiting, blood or pus from wounds or menstruating etc., negates this ablution so a person would be forbidden from prayer. If this occurs then the ablution must be carried out again with water, since the use of tissues is not sufficient for cleansing purity.

Those natural occurrences mentioned above, plus other activities (such as intercourse etc), a Muslim would be expected to cleanse themselves for prayer by having complete ablution (Ghusl) or bath.

Since with partial ablution, a woman menstruating would probably be constantly cleansing, it would seem preferable for them to wait until the end of the cycle then have Ghusl. This would apply to men experiencing discharges of any sort, or anyone in recuperation from an injury or surgery. It sounds archaic, but thems the rules. I dont think this is necessarily discriminating, since if a Muslim woman is faithful enough, then they accept the conditions of that faith.

A bigot is also a prejudiced person who is intolerant of people of different ethnicity, race, or class.
Yep thats a Bigot your point being?

Or are you trying to misconstue something else?
No just clarity Dave. But if you are intolerant of people of a culture and religious beliefs, then would you not also be placing your tent firmly in the grounds of the bigot camp also?
