My 13yr old daughter has asked me some questions about the bible and religion and i'm not quite sure how to answer them. I do not believe in God but have brought her up to always respect the views and beliefs of others(religious or otherwise) even if she doesn't agree with them. She would like to know - 1. How can people believe that a baby (Jesus) could be conceived in any other way apart from the conventional way? 2. Why does the Bible say that being gay is wrong when gay people are allowed to be priests and does that mean that even though they are doing God's work does He still think they are wrong. 3. How come some things in the Bible are still followed today but not others? When she asked I said I didn't know but would get back to her on it. Any views welcome! Thanks

Tell her the TRUTH. That the Great Pommegranat exploded and populated the Earth. And I am its representative on Earth. All donations accepted.
There is no denying the Old Testament is an abomination written by a a bunch of self serving biggoted, misogynist old men. It is still used today by the same kinds of men to justify evil actions.

The mistake is thinking we should have any respect for the book or the practice of worshiping its monsterous deity.

Absolutely,mate.
To answer your daughter's last question first. OT was written by and for the Israelites, the Jews. God wanted them as a people for Himself, and still does, in spite of several thousand years of history, they are still His chosen people, but that is another story. They were given a list of commandments to live by, and if they broke them, they were to make sacrifices to atone for their sin. These sacrifices couldn't stop them sinning though.

When Jesus came, he changed everything. When He lived, he showed us how we should live, a pure and sinless life, but it is s till not possible for us to do that, we all sin and fall short of the glory of God. When Jesus was crucified, he became the sacrifice for our sin, he paid the price, and we do not have to. But to receive that sacrifice we have to acknowledge Jesus as our Lord and Saviour.
If we don't then the wages of sin are still the same - death. Through the death of Jesus we have everlasting life, he comes to live in us by the power of the Holy Spirit, the Holy Spirit is our comforter and guide, and a help in trouble.

Now to the homosexuality bit, which exercises so many people. God has called us all to be fruitful and multiply. Homosexual relationships, same gender sex, cannot do this, and as such are worthless in God's eyes. The difference between OT and NT is that old testament laws asked for stoning, in the NT Jesus says love one another as I have loved you. Another stoneable offence was adultery, but when Jesus met the women caught in adultery, he said her sins were forgiven, to go and sin no more. God has not changed, he still calls homosexuality an abomination, but we as believers we are called to hate the sin, but love the sinner.

I
If a person so desires, God can bring one out of all addictions, to alcohol, drugs, and cigarettes, homosexuality, pornography and paedophilia, and of cause, by Jesus' atonement, wash you clean of that sin. Remember that Jesus said to those wanting to stone the woman, let him who is without sin, throw the first stone. No one did, and Jesus as the only sinless one, said neither did He condemn her.

The virgin birth. This has to be a matter of belief, because at present there is no proof, but many prophecies in the bible talk about this happening - if this child was just an ordinary child why did Herod go to such lengths to have him destroyed? He had all Jewish babies under two years old killed., There is a saying, seeing is believing, but believers in Christ say Believing is seeing, it is as if scales drop from your eyes the moment you accept Christ, everything falls into place.

Dear Huncamunca, I hope this may be of some use to you and your daughter, and my prayer is that you will both one day come to the knowledge of the truth about Jesus
This Herod thing. mentioned by anybody else at the time, was it ?
merejeans, There is a line of thought suggesting that Jesus, the son of Joseph, was the true heir to the throne, and this is why Herod issued the order for all boys under 2 years of age to be slaughtered.

Huncamunca, in answer to your questions:

1. Some people will believe whatever their teachers tell them, however unlikely.

2. The church bends the rules when it suits them.

3. As 2.
merejeans explanation of the sin of homosexuality also condemns infertile people becuse they don't multiply. Should they also be stoned?
Me and my ex were stoned once, and drunk too. And though we tried, it didn't help us mutliply .

And we thank the Lord for that.
Children are taught religion for them to have some common morals which society expect of them, to fit in!

As they age they do question the 'words'. Like reading them Peter Pan.....they soon find out they can't fly!

Huncamunca...,.I think you're trying to 'wind-us-up' or get loads of emails..............hope this email helps fill your site.

Children don't need to be taught religion for them to have 'common morals'. They just need caring, sensible parents. I think you'll find that most atheists are perfectly capable of teaching their children right from wrong, and to fit into society as well as anyone else. To say otherwise is nonsense.
Well said.
In fact, as has been noted before, atheists make up a smaller percentage of prisoners than they do percentage of the overall population for pretty much any country you care to name, proving beyond the shadow of a doubt, beyond the merest scintilla of suspicion, beyond the event horizon of disbelief that atheists are better behaved than religious people.

So there, with knobs on and no returns.
Chidren are taught religion to understand religion and others belief, not necesarily to be indoctrinated into any particular path.

Children are taught science to understand science, not necessarily become a scientist.

I had country lessons.
Just how accurate and reliable are waldos fuigures?
Do prisoners spend the first few hours in jail on an induction course filling out forms and statistical data such as what religion are you if any, and how do you eat your Cadburys' cream egg?
I'm sure they are all real enthusiastic about helping the prison authorities fill out data collection stats.
I smell a rat.
One would presume that Waldo has used Government statistics.

So they are as accurate and reliable as all of those.
Even if the figures are correct, this could be because crazy mixed up people have got their lives back together after embracing religion?
All prisons - certainly in first world countries - ask religion as a matter of course so they can accomodate the religious needs of the jail population. According to stats on self-identified religion, atheists are under represented in jails.

However, I was being somewhat facetious since there's a whole raft of pretty obvious reasons why those figures may not suggest a correlation.

The truth is that there's less atheists in jail because we're better at not getting caught. And there's not a shadow of doubt or scintilla of suspcion that this isn't completely correct.

Thanks to everyone who took the time to reply.

terambulan- I am certainly not 'winding-up' anyone. My child and I both have morals and fit perfectly well into society thanks very much.

merejeans - ' God has called us all to be fruitful and multiply'. Care to explain nuns and priests?
I came first in the race yesterday .

Because I was the only one running.

I am the only atheist in the prison..........

Because I was the only one who could not remember who created me.

When they took me to the elctrich chair......................

That refreshed my memory ................but even I called him but perhaps it was too late.

The only atheist in the prison died as atheist because he could not make his mind up in time.
