You Only Need One Of Them And That Is "Love Your Neighbour" If You Did You Wouldn't Steal from him ,murder him, take his wife Etc Ect.
I reckon that if we all lived by the 10 commandments that there would be no need for the thousands of other laws that we are supposed to live by,!!

ten commandments...pile of religious hooey
just a thought: would anybody not say that essentially 'everybody' lives their lives by the ten commandments (even if they are only applied in a broad sense/contextual settings?)
Joanne some are just common sense so are adhered to without knowing it.
But those that are of a religious leaning, particularly the one about the sabbath, only but the most devout would follow.
I agree that some of them are irrelevant, but mostly I'd find it hard to put up an argument against 'thou shall not kill'.

I should declare that I have been known to covet my neighbour's ass on occasion though.

Just to flesh this thread out a little, I thought, with all due respect to Wizard, perhaps we could do with a little nudge to remember just what the 10 commandments are.
Are they relevant ?

Thou shalt have no other gods before me
Thou shalt not make for thyself an idol
Thou shalt not make wrongful use of the name of thy Go
Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy
Honor thy Father and Mother
Thou shalt not murder
Thou shalt not commit adultery
Thou shalt not steal
Thou shalt not bear false witness
Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's ass, etc.
not quite sure who 'thy Go' is, but I have a sneaking feeling it should have been 'thy God'. :o)
One by one so:

1. That's me ********.
2. That's Simon Cowell stuffed...
3. Pretty much all of us there.
4. Tesco opens sunday, and we all use it - admit it.
5. This is very relevant, unless your dad's Fred West
6. Relevant
7. That's a can of worms - how do you define it?
8. Fair enough - so long as it doesn't include copying cds!
9. No-one can truthfully claim that they never lie
10., as i said in my post above...
So I suppose it's really 2/10 that are fully possible to live up to?
I do think they are relevant. Many of them are not only the "holy" way of life, but are the basis for our legal and moral way of living. living.
It has always been my contention that the 10 commandments are a fairly good hand-book for living life.....................it's only when people start shouting about making them a rule-book that I start to worry.............

I believe that any society eschewing to follow these 'guidelines' would soon find itself in trouble..................but the divinity of their construction is an idea I have trouble following.........
Ignoring the religiously-oriented ones, the moral commandments are hardly special. Are we to seriously supposed to understand that prior to Moses coming down the mountain, the Israelites would go around murdering whoever they felt like? Or stealing? etc.

It doesn't exactly require a great deal of intelligence to realise that it didn't require the 10 Commandments for people to understand that murder was wrong, stealing was wrong etc.

Those moral commandments are perfectly fine, but you really don't need God to have established those principles.
The ten commandments or laws of the land were made to control a society and give them moral codes to live by. , it doesn,t mean we take them verbatem, word for word, society has changed since Moses came down from the mountain so to speak. For instance it would be difficult to honor thy mother and father while they are beating the ..... out of you. I,m sure a lot of people find that one hard to go by today. Children have more rights than they did back then. I think it is more of a moral issue than a religious one. I believe some of the commandments adhere to todays society but not all.
I'm neither religious nor perfect but I try living my life by the rules of the Ten Commandments. And I do agree that they are the basis for our legal and moral ways of living. I bet if more people recognized and practice them the world would be a much better place.
society, I agree with you, making the world a better place for everyone should be top on the agenda for living our lives. However it comes down to tolerance, Not everyone is as tolerant of others. Especially when it comes to religions. I personally think some, not all, people hide behind thier reiligion in order to get thier way. I wish more people thought like you. Morally we already know right from wrong.
I find it hard to find fault with moswinner's post at the very top.

I vote for this as best newbie post of the week
Don't forget the last part . . . "as thyself". If your neighbor happens to be a goddam murderous adulterous lying thief you have the essential right to defend yourself as well as the neighbors that love you, to the extent this proves to be necessary.

I suppose they still serve a purpose though as a guide to those who have not yet learned to think rationally.
