Seperating The Person From The Opinion
48 Answers
I'll be the first to put my hands up to the fact that I havn't been too kind on here to those with a religious faith. Just wanted to get that out of the way...
But is it possible that we can (both on A.B and in the wider community) begin to see past religious opinions and see people for who they are, rather than what they believe?
I have born again Christian friends, I work with evangelical Christians, I work on a Wednesday with a muslim, on a Thursday I work with an atheist. No-one bats an eyelid and we all get on great.
Isnt it about what we share (our humanity) that makes the difference to how we treat each other and not our differences?
Who cares if 'God' created us or if we are simply the product of nature?
Shouldn't the simple (observable) fact that we are all here together, at this moment in time, be enough to inspire us to work together towards a better life?

I can’t disagree that the people of Stoke are nice. I once found myself in a bit of a dilemma in Stoke and fortunately for me the 'Stokians' (bet I've got that wrong!) I encountered were very nice indeed. That said, I think we have to distinguish between conversations that pop up naturally in the real world and conversations that are purposely created here. In the main people come here specifically to discuss certain topics and, for lack of other more personal information, are often labelled - and judged - solely by their interests and opinions.

Never been to Stoke. Been to AB often.
Bears pointing out that "ramming beliefs down another's throat" is only possible in real life. Here one can opt not to read or respond to a thread that one isn't or thinks might not be comfortable with. If one chooses to debate then obviously that was a choice.

Most of the time I can treat people as the persons they present themselves to be. The person that someone presents him/herself to be is based on their personality characteristics and their awareness of the needs of others. But I find it difficult to take seriously the opinions of people who believe, because they have read it in an ancient book, that there is an invisible man in the sky who knows everything we do, and everything we think, and who is going to make things hot for us if we don't do as he says. People who actually believe that are all suspects for the funny farm, as far as I am concerned.
//Quite a strong change of opinion from you there nailit//
Not really hereiam. I've said many times that I'm acquainted with many religious people and have been for most of my life. For the most part, we all get along. I don't let peoples religious beliefs get in the way of our shared human beliefs. Hence the OP about separating the person from the opinion.
Ive known many decent and kind people of faith. But it seems to me that they are decent and kind in spite of their faith, not because of it.
If a question is posed in R&S, then (as a former believer) I will attempt to answer it... No bad intent meant, but sometimes exasperation takes over. Sure that it would read different in real life ;-)
//Wonderful sentiments Nailit.
My affection for you only ever increases//
Don't over do it Theland! People will start talking!!
Are we on for that pint or what?

Yes we are very nice naomi...got me wondering what the dilemma was now though??
And it Stokies, not Stokians ;-)
(And for some strange reason, some people seem to think that the Stoke accent and the Scouse accent are the same...God forbid!)

Nailit. The dilemma. Winter, late night, pre-SatNav, on my way north, completely lost somewhere in the back waters of Stoke, small, very tired children in tow and, for me, panic beginning to get the upper hand. Ahhh .. a pub. Bundling children out of car and entering said pub, ‘Do you have rooms’, say I. ‘No’, says the landlady, ‘We only opened tonight… we’re still in a bit of a mess upstairs’. ‘Thank you, sorry to trouble you’, say I, bundling said children up again in readiness to exit pub and continue driving to who knows where. ‘Hang on’ says landlady, ‘If you don’t mind roughing it a bit, I can make beds up for you’. Do angels exist? Only in human form. God(?) bless ‘Stokians’. :o)

Can't be more than 3-4 weeks ago you were describing Stoke as a dump or words to that effect!! Make your mind up.
