It must be difficult for anyone who has been on the receiving end of Mr Perkins' vile diatribes not to smile at the way 'his God' has treated him.

A better approach, and I am sure it will be adopted by the majority of gay people who, by definition, are tolerant and forgiving people, is simply to wait for Mr Perkins to come around to explaining with the same level of fervor and self- aggrandisement with which he normally holds forth - just why it is that a faithful servant like him was targeted along with all the other deserving sufferers.

He will find an answer I am sure - something about 'being a sinner' or a similar get-out-of-jail-free card that people like him have ready to use.

But maybe in the wee small hours, Mr Perkins will reflect objectively on what being a smug prejudiced small-minded bigoted odious human being has brought him by way of a reward.

There is a particular sect of Calvinism that says that as a result of predestination ( more than one flavour available folks even for the Calvinists )
God not only saves the elect but marks those to be saved (coz he knows who they are/will be) with special favours on earth ! ( like nice houses and no floods, success in the stock market etc )

I don't know about that, Naomi. He presumed to speak for God (overweening arrogance or what?) and he was duly punished.
But God, while jealous of his authority, is merciful so he planted in this man's mind at some earlier time the idea of getting a canoe.
He's been rebuked but things could have been much worse.

As an atheist, I see that as a catch-all convenient get-out clause that excuses God for allowing all the grief to be visited on 'his people' on earth, without lifting a divine finger to help.

then the grauniad goes on to point the finger at eurocrats - the article is a bit like an AB thread - comprehensible only in parts. The grauniad hack seemed to think eurocrats were rain gods and made it rain harder in Zummerzet.
