sandyRoe - "... Some would say that the Jew has had an unhealthy influence on the Western World. If such people had made a study of their prejudice would it be acceptable?..."

Obviously you're speaking about anti-Semitism. I would say that if someone had studied the Jewish religious texts and examined the Jewish customs and found that they were not to their liking then their dislike of the Jewish religion may indeed be rational and yet by definition, anti-semitic. However, no one (unless I am mistaken) considers those who are anti-semitic to be suffering from a form of mental illness.

And that's the fine point of it. Only Islam makes this astonishing claim - that to have a dislike of Islam is to have a mental illness.

Surely you can appreciate the difference between dislike and hatred and a psychotic condition? I have looked at the Torah and the Jewish customs and traditions and found some of them to be absolutely abhorrent. To give one very specific example, the circumcision of infants is a particularly repugnant practice - the slicing off of a tiny baby's foreskin which is then quite literally sucked off by a suitably appointed Rabbi is enough to make one sick to the stomach. Does my dismay and disgust at such a practice make me anti-semitic? If so, so be it. I don't think that that my revulsion to this barbaric, medieval ritual makes me mentally ill though. Do you?

birdie1971, no, obviously it doesn't.
But where is it written that a dislike of Islam is an indicator of mental health problems?

Err... 'Islamophobia'? Are we reading different threads you and I? I was commenting on a post ... no sorry, I can't be bothered. It would take me some considerable time to reiterate and restate the previously posted arguments and refute their absurdities again. If you're going to be that obtuse then I'm not playing.

If this post confuses you than I would encourage you to re-read the previous posts and hopefully develop some kind of rudimentary thinking process at the same time. I'm sorry, but I cannot pander to people who seem to be wilfully misunderstanding basic logic.

"Islamophobia, n. : Intense dislike or fear of Islam, esp. as a political force; hostility or prejudice towards Muslims." (First recorded in the Journal of Theological Studies, 1923)..."
No mention here of mental health issues for the people who might be thought to be Islamophobes.
I thought perhaps you'd found it had been added to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. Has it not?

I'm genuinely interested, where and by who is this claim made?
Sandyroe - "... "...Only Islam makes this astonishing claim - that to have a dislike of Islam is to have a mental illness... I'm genuinely interested, where and by who is this claim made?..."

As I've previously said, you're being deliberately obtuse. As to whom is making this claim, well, Islam as it happens. The word "Islamophobia" is a word that has been invented by those who wish to protect Islam from criticism. It's a disingenuous, evil and clever word that leads people (who don't think too much about language and how it is used) to believe that to speak disparagingly about Islam is to have a form of mental illness.

Please think about this. As I understand it, you're a Christian. There is no such word as "Christianophobia". Nor is there a word, "Sikhophobia", etc. It is not considered a form of mental illness not to believe in the literal existence of Jesus is it?

Do I have to spell it out even more?
