In response to a privately-funded 'Ten Commandments' monument on government property, a group of Satanists have reached their funding target and plan on building a monument to Satan nearby.

They argue that the TC monument violates the first amendment, and that if Christians are allowed to build monuments, so should they.

Here's a picture of how the statue will look:

Valid point or needlessly inflammatory?

It will be no bad thing if this statue of the Great Horned One was erected. It would serve to remind the faithful that he walks amongst us looking for opportunities to turn people from the path of righteousness towards that of sin.
A point of principle, I'd say. (I wonder how they know what he looks like? The same way artists know what Jesus and the Virgin Mary looked like, I suppose. Vivid imagination).
I wanted one of those in my front garden but I couldn't get planning permission.
If you look at the Bible, despite the bad reputation, Satan actually did a lot less bad stuff than God.
I don't see the problem. Would Star Wars fans object to a statue of Darth Vader?

This would be more akin to a statue of Palpatine ;P
Valid point, I think. Oklahoma State amended federal law to allow for the placement of religious statues within its precincts, and promptly erected a construct detailing "The 10 commandments", spelling errors and all. This was at the behest of some fundie christian state representatives, wishing to reattach religion ( theirs, naturally!) and state.

So of course other religions ( and none) have, quite rightly, decided that if the christians can have one, so can the others, and Oklahoma does not have a legal leg to stand on. It was their own fault. They should have stayed with the Federal Law that requires that State buildings are resolutely secular.

Go Satanists! And it is inflammatory, sure, but not needlessly so :)
^^ Quite amusing really. :o)
A statue of the devil should wear an expensive suit, be driven in a limo and puff a big cigar but there's nothing in the 1st. Amendment to stop an individual making a total prat of himself.
I just hope the stonemason gets his spelling right, we don't want a statue entitled 'Stan'.
What makes it interesting is the fact it's in the US which is debatabe the most religious country inthe world .
From the comments - "I'm just confused why they made it look like Ann Coulter"

. . . Coincidence?
Spirited debate on this issue on Fox News the other day, which you might be interested in watching;

One guy reasonably enough says you should just ban all religions from erecting monuments/statues on government property; All the other panellists seem to disagree to a greater or less extent, one even advocating that they should be allowed to erect their monument, then all be shot alongside it. Fine christian attitude, that ;)
