Octavius, // I prefer attending talks and debates on issues that concern inequalities and poverty in peoples lives right now, //

And that’s exactly what many of the people who take the time to argue against religion are doing – not for sanctimonious one-upmanship, or showboating – unjust and rather spiteful charges - but because, as well as attempting to help tackle world issues on a day to day basis, they also attempt to address the ever-festering root of much of the on-going problem – the ban on birth control for one and the subjugation of women for another. How little you understand. The phrase “Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day; show him how to catch fish, and you feed him for a lifetime” springs to mind.

Fred, :o)
No Lazygun, not really. For a start most of the R&S debates are one sided! And I wouldn't particularly choose to go and sit and listen to these debates either. Happy enough to read, absorb and sometimes comment, even when the premise is fallacious.

I find the idea of it tedious because invariably it sounds tit-for-tat playground fisticuffs and nothing comes of it - apart from who can preach the loudest (reminds me of a scene from the Life of Brian). My preference is towards debates and discussions that lead to ideas, a change in perception and then action.

I imagine the talker will believe that people are flocking to listen and align with their 'message' so even if modelller preaches the loudest, its unlikley they will hear.
//My preference is towards debates and discussions that lead to ideas, a change in perception and then action. //

Mine too - and that's exactly what I said.
"Engagement is surely preferable to preaching to the converted, especially if it can be kept civil and there is tea and scones :)"

Not forgetting 23 rousing verses of Kumbaya....
Octavius, the weasel words of self serving theocracies can and should be contradicted at any level. The myths fallacies and downrights lies are what sustain their domination of society and their propagation of poverty, ignorance and suffering. It is often not enough just to do good, we must also try to prevent the doing of harm.
jomifl, "The majority who attend are believers of a some sort from weak to strong , and then there are agnostics and atheists and those who just like a good arguement."

You may need to go along to stop them harming themselves and each other!
Sounds a bit like 'theological fight club', is it on a satellite channel?
jomifl, you should know that the first rule of theological fight club is: you do not talk about theological fight club.

It will probably be on You've Been Framed sometime soon.
// Jim, frank and direct are my middle names. ;o) //

So you've three middle names, two of them men's?
In that case Octavius I am extremely unlikely to see it.
Haaaa! Twit! :o)
That ^^ was to Ludwig.
jomifl - then you MUST attend.
"theological fight club" - Interesting concept :) And sort of the problem with much of organised religion in a microcosm.

The ninja warriors of atheism, armed with pen and sharp tongue, characterised by being bolshie vs the stalwart crusaders of religion, armed with a bible and tunnel vision, characterised by the certitude of faith.... :)
The ninja warriors of atheism - stealth and invisibility cult .....!!!
//Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day; show him how to catch fish, and you feed him for a lifetime”//

In a hardware shop in my town they have this one the wall with another line added.

"Teach a man religion and he will starve to death waiting for a fish to magically appear."
//For a start most of the R&S debates are one sided!//

Yes because the side of religion has nothing intelligent to counter the sound arguments put forward by atheists.
@beso - Where religion went seriously wrong was when it departed from this sort of teaching

"/Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day; show him how to catch fish, and you feed him for a lifetime”

to this, with the inquisition etc :)

"“Give a man a fire and he's warm for a day, but set fire to him and he's warm for the rest of his life.”"

'Build a man a fire and he'll be warm for a day, set a man on fire and he'll be warm for the rest of his life'
Hah!
