And the Lord was with Judah; and he drave out the inhabitants of the mountain; but could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron.

Iron chariots have always been problem for any deity :-)
I expect the wheel bearings were seized, grease wasn't the same back in them days!
Well, he could have been had the Bible stopped at Genesis 2:3 (So God blessed the seventh day .... God rested from all his work which he had done in creation) but for some unknown reason people added to it and got us in the mess we're in today...;
I expect it was his loyal servants that failed to drive them out. The Diety would have been a spectator.
A short while ago spoonboy came up with "give the atheists some slack". I notice that every day lately the atheists are trying their damndest to convert believers to their way. No luck with me though.
Mrs Lulu, where do you get the idea that atheists are trying to convert you to anything? All we are doing is discussing the philophical, logical and historical anomolies upon which religion appears to be based. You need not concern yourself with these discussions since you have belief which neatly sidesteps these troubleome intellectual details. I'm sure your god will show his appreciation in some unambiguous way for your solid faith.
MrsLulu : I believe in God but not the one portrayed in these religious books so definitely not an atheist.

OG, //The Diety would have been a spectator. //

Oooo .... This is the word of God, we're talking about, so no room for speculation. It has to be true.

Well, that bit about him creating the world suggests he ought to be the creator, doesn't it?
jomifl, He has already done so - many times.
:-)
If he was Almighty, why didn't he send down a few thunderbolts to get rid of the chariots ? Or a vast flood or a pestilence - I seem to remember some of those in the Old Testament. I'm sure an Almighty must have lots of options, but he clearly didn't choose any of them.
Not as Almighty as all that, then ?

How can you be sure the God you think is doing it is the one that really is doing it? This post alone indicates that you're crediting the wrong bloke.
Much can be lost on the passing of stories from one generation to another. The lord would be with Judah, as he is with all his creations surely ? So it need not be interpreted that the lord was taking an active role. than may have been an assumption made a few generations down the line. Those acting in his name fail to take the valley, those who come later 'big it up' a bit.
Question Author
OG, In that case, the whole must be called into question. If one bit is wrong, how can we be certain the other bits are right?
"Not as Almighty as all that, then ?"

Well possessing such great power and having the resolve not to use it at every turn shows the wonder of his magnanimity doesn't it.

"With great power, comes great responsibility" Uncle Ben, Spider-Man
@Octavius - Liking the Uncle Ben reference although i cannot seem to shake images of fried rice products now :)

Apart from that- the inference of the article is that the Lord could not drive out the inhabitants- not "could have done but chose not to".

Inability, not magnanimity.... :)
It's an intriguing passage, and such a strange, almost idle comment. New one to me, anyway.
