jomifl; With respect to your wife, one does not exclude the other. If you listen to The Creation and don't feel for what Haydn was saying, then it remains a great choral work, but no more. If you read The Duino Elegies and don't feel for what Rilke was articulating, then they remain accomplished poems. If you look at The Disrobing of Christ and cannot empathise with the feelings of El Greco then it remains a superb painting only.
All these you may understand and like, but my friends, that ain't the whole enchilada.

It is regrettable Khandro, that most of humanity will never be able to commune spiritually with the great artists and musicians as you do. Perhaps your true vocation lies yet before you. using your 'logic', i therefore cannot appreciate paintings of sailing, trains, planes and cars - since i dont understand them and didnt make them
i cannot appreciate pics of any animals - since i am not a cat or dog etc so i cannot appreciate them

so basically i cannot appreciate any art or paintings of anything unless i totally understand and feel strongly about it

one of the main points about art - one which most artists will tell you - is that whats important is what it means to the viewer, rather than what the artist tells you it means... they will tell you their motivation but they want it to speak to you and take you in a new direction. art that can do that is what most artists strive for.

as lazygun has said - this was nonsense the first time you suggested, and nothing has changed.
