What draws highly successful, and apparently rational, people like Tom Cruise and John Travolta to Scientology?

same thing that draws people into mainstream religion - a religion is just a cult that has hung around for a while
Could it be because that "church" goes out of its way to attract people with (a) high profiles, and (b) loads of money?

Scientology wouldn't be interested in you or me, because we can't bankroll them.

Jayne, that seems obvious to most people, but why do these apparently rational people fall for it?
Possibly to keep them in the public eye? There's no such thing as bad publicity (allegedly)
what makes anyone think they are rational, Tom is on his third marriage and seems rather an odd bod, whereas John is now embroiled in allegations about his sexuality, and they work in an industry that is known widely as la la land.

^^ True.
The Dwarf did have a slightly odd freak out on that chat show.
My dog's banned from the furniture for doing that.
Scientology is the smug club.
It's his birthday today.
Do they exchange gifts?
i have rarely come across anyone who is rational where any religion is concerned, get into a lengthy debate about why they believe, and you will get more claptrap than even the redtops can deliver.
It goes without saying that all religion is absurd, but Scientology really does take the biscuit.

I have often wondered how seemingly intelligent people can believe in a religion invented just 60 odd years ago by a sci-fi writer who, paraphrasing, once said the easiest way to get rich is to invent a religion.

If that isn't enough to make them realise what utter cobblers scientology is, you only have to throw some of their beliefs into the mix and it gets to the point where you have to seriously question their sanity.
Is Scientology the 'religion' that forces women to remain completely silent during childbirth?
The best bit about Scientology is how if you give them enough money, they will let you read some top secret nonsense that Hubbard wrote about how we all came from aliens. Utterly bizarre.

Good piece in the Times2 today.

Not sure that I'd call Cruise "rational" though.
No...

It states there should be no noise in the delivery room as in music or others talking, not that the mother can't make a sound.
I think it is Daffy,
(what a load of codswallop)
Oh, not saying a agree with it, or any religion BTW, but the mother has to be silent during birth is a myth.
Has anyone here actually studied scientology in depth? Could someone give me a basic rundown or direct me me where i can find a basic rundown of what this religions foundations and structure is?
Thanks Chuck, I thought it might be an exaggeration but never bothered to look into it.
What Scientologists Actually Believe

Thanks Chuck. I have vague recollection of something being spouted about Katie not being to say anything when she was in labour. I didn't pay that much attention.
