non-believers don't have to swear, they can affirm that they will tell the truth. But yes, we may well have reached the point where swearing on the Bible should no longer be the default option.

short answer ........... no
Non believers can affirm... aand you can 'swear' on the koran too

You are sworn in when on a jury I affirmed that too
You don't swear on a bible any more, you just swear to tell the truth.

My ex brother in law refused to swear on the bible in court, not because he didn't believe, quite the opposite, he was very godly and is now actually ordained, but because he said there's something in the bible which says you shouldn't.
In actual fact he was just a blooming liar and didn't want his god to send down a thunderbolt to strike him dead :)
Sorry, should have been you don't have to swear on a bible anymore.
oh, sounds like we already have, then
in that case it sounds as if we haven't... is swearing on a Bible still the default then?

There has been the choice of giving oath or affirming in the UK courts for at least 20 years.

Dont suppose any of it means someones going to tell the truth! Lol....

Was just a thought when i seen on tv xx
Much longer than 20 years,hc. It is over 30 years since I served on a jury and I confirmed.
What an idiot! AFFIRMED...sorry.
More than 30 years I was only 23 when I did jury service
Many years ago I was in court as my brother was in trouble. We got his headmaster to come to court to say what a good boy he was. He was a jesuit priest and they handed him the bible to take the oath. Immediately the judge cut in and stopped them saying, "I don't think that will be necessary". !
On both occasions when I served on a jury, I was the only one to Affirm - all the rest chose to swear on the bible, so presumably they were believers - not that some of them behaved in a particularly Christian way in the jury room.
In my case, not recommended . . . unless you perceive lightning bolts in the courtroom as entertainment.

"Place you hand on the Bible and repeat after me. Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth?"

"Hell Yeah . . . God dammit!"

Many people who swear on the bible still lie in court. You might as well use Harry potter.
