It's not a city so maybe not
I live in Bolton and i'm pretty sure it hasn't.
Having a Cathedral is not a reason for it to be a city, that is just an old wives tale
It has an abbey but it's not a cathedral.
This is really for B00 to answer; her neck of the woods.

Parish - http://boltonparishchurch.co.uk/
Until 1889 a city needed a cathedral.
Looking on a map, there's no cathedral I can see, and Googling it doesn't bring up anything either.

I think the only "cathedral" there is the Reebok Stadium!
18 cities in the UK without a Cathedral

Used to be the benchmark but stopped last century. C'mon people, keep up.
According to a list of churches within Greater Manchester, then there is no cathederal in Bolton, as below

http://en.wikipedia.o...ter_Manchester#Bolton

By precedent, is the notion of a cathederal in Bolton a colloquial reverance attached to the Parish church of St Peter, as this is the largest church innthe centre of Bolton? Just a thought!
and B00s house.....
Preston is England's newest City. It does not have a cathedral.
I disagree that it's an "old wive's tale", The House-Husband. Certainly in England and Wales it used to be a requirement and therefore most (maybe all) cities do have a cathedral. There are a few cathedral towns though which are not officially cities but are known locally as cities.
That's why I said "maybe not" rather than "definitely not"
Okay, most but by no means all cities have a cathedral.
Looking at Zac-Master's list though I picked one at random and found Salford does have a cathedral, albeit an RC one- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salford_Cathedral
If you care to explore my link a little more it shows both RC and Anglican cities without cathedrals.
Dont know about a cathedral but it has a great market
Likewise Zacs. Towns WITH Cathedrals that are not City's

Blackburn
Brecon
Bury St Edmunds
Guildford
Rochester
Southwark
Southwell
Sorry, I'm not sure of your point, Zacs-Master.
You said there are "18 cities in the UK without a cathedral" and then gave a link to a list of 18 cities. I was simply saying the one I looked into, Salford, does have a cathedral.

Anyway, the main point we agree on is that Bolton doesn't have a cathedral
Just to confirm what has been said, there is no Cathedral here.
Think I said at 10 O'clock that Bolton doesn't have a cathedral!!
and Bolton Abbey isn't in Bolton.
