religious or atheist...

no matter which way you look at it, life is all a bit absurd.
From a naturalistic point of view, this planet that we live on will one day be consumed by the sun and all life will cease to exist. So why bother with any kind of advancement? We will all die in the end and cease to exsist anyway.

From a supernatural perspective (religious, spiritual etc) its just as meaningless.
We all evolve or enter into another dimension (reincarnate or end up in heaven / hell /summerland or some other realm) but to what purpose? What happens when we end up 'enlightened'? What then?

Any thought guys?
Thanks...

Who are calling a dog!!!!

Oh I see, you are calling the dogs, dogs.
Enjoying this but must now do some work! Have a good day - it's like winter out there.
Actually, archeraddict, this site is a lot tamer than it used to be. For many years we had a feisty woman who called herslf naomi24 who would sometimes get very tetchy and give a very hard time to those who disagreed with her.
But we all loved her and I, for one, miss her despite the insults she offered me before she left.

We're all quite charming really.
It's microcosm of the world at large archeraddict, and as such you'll find a few pompous arses on here, as you've already noted. Best thing is to ignore them.
OK, What the hey, I'll play -

Perhaps it all boils down to appreciating and making the most of the fact that we are the beneficiaries of extraordinary good fortune and the knowledge gained by those before us whose existence as sentient beings also defies unimaginable odds culminating in the ability to ask and respond to questions in The AnswerBank . . .

. . . or maybe it's just because there's no place else left to go but up!
Archeraddict – First thing you need to do here is declare yourself an atheist or agnostic at least and you would be welcomed and all your opinions would be accepted because you would fit into about 95% of the population of the posters under R & S.

To answer your question I would only say few things. People here like logic, and just keep that in your mind. Your key board has a purpose, your glasses, your nose, your eyes, your hands, even a single hair on your body has a purpose. In fact you would not be able to think of a single item in this world that has no purpose. The only thing has not got a purpose is you, yourself. You are born, give birth to others like you and die. This is what many (95% I talked about above) believe and they like logical discussion. However this is the most illogical logic according the little knowledge I posses.
I see trees of green, red roses too
I see them bloom for me and you
And I think to myself what a wonderful world.

I see skies of blue and clouds of white
The bright blessed day, the dark sacred night
And I think to myself what a wonderful world.

The colors of the rainbow so pretty in the sky
Are also on the faces of people going by
I see friends shaking hands saying how do you do
They're really saying I love you.

I hear babies crying, I watch them grow
They'll learn much more than I'll never know
And I think to myself what a wonderful world
Yes I think to myself what a wonderful world.
ll_billym, You are of course right, it is a wonderful world, its just such a shame that we have so many religious freaks that want to tear it apart by trying to prove they have the most peaceful God.

Without religion we really would have a wonderful world.
keyplus is right, archeraddict; many of us do like logic and reason, using the brain that evolution has given us. But it's also fun to have religious eccentrics like keyplus to lighten things up a bit.
We used to have more of them but Theland seems to have disappeared and the highly knowlegeable and otherwise intelligent Clanad plays down his uncharacteristic religiousness nowadays.
Well said, RATTER15.
////many of us do like logic and reason, using the brain that evolution has given us.////

Its good to use brain and nothing wrong in it. But I do wonder sometimes that the why same people who believe "brain" as being product of an "accident" also believe that they can solve mystery of this world using that same accidental product.

Just another thought. Logical or not but definitely have some common sense.
Keyplus -

You're making a mistake by using the word 'accident' when describing evolution. It's a word that many theists such as yourself like to use in order to tacitly discredit the valid scientific theory of evolution – a branch of science that is backed up by anthropology, geology, astronomy, palaeontology, biology, genetics, physics, chemistry, etc. Evolutionary development is not done by 'accident'. The fact that you're using such a word to describe evolution shows just how little you know about the subject you're commenting on.

birdie: I think that will be a case of in one ear out of the other where Keyplus is concerned, his Holy book says different and that MUST be the truth or his life would cave in around him.
so no further 'thoughts' from wrightspie since thursday.

that was a worthwhile debate then.
-- answer removed --
I've been waiting for the original poster to rejoin this debate.

"Or is this just meaningless?"
I have no idea if the human brain can solve every puzzle. Given the complexity of some things I suspect exact details will always be hidden, and we'll end up with things we don't even know we don't know. But I see no reason to doubt the brain's ability to delve into mysteries regardless how it came to be.
What was removed?
probably a posting from wrightspie under their real user name that they asked the ed to remove!

dunno.
keyplus90 - I have 'outed' myself as a Christian here a long time ago and I have no problem with that. I am a person of faith but I still enjoy constructive debate and find anyone, whether atheist or 'religious', who can not open their minds to what others think, very difficult to understand. I hope we can all respect each other's views and acknowledge the fact that we can prove very little in life.

There are Christian (and I'm sure other believers in a Deity) scientists and atheist scientists. I have read Richard Dawkins and not been persuaded and believe Alistair McGrath to be more accurate - but neither can prove whether they are right. Scientific minds have always believed they are right in their time, but often proved to be wrong by the next generation of brilliant minds.

Likewise, Christians have interpreted the Bible in a way that gives them the excuse to pander to their own prejudices forgetting that, whilst I believe 'all scripture is inspired by God, and is useful for teaching.....etc' it was still written by men, in a cultural context, which should be considered when looking at what it is saying to us now.

I believe that God still 'inspires us' today and is still revealing truth. Thankfully therefore, women are no longer treated as second class citizens and slavery is not tolerated.

To me, my faith makes sense of the world and the injustice that I see around me - if this is all there was, I would struggle. BUT, that is just me and my view. I'm not angry with those who take a different approach. Disagree if we must but why do we have to be so cruel?
