Are you allowed to use mobile phones in a cathedrals cloister?

A cadet was using their phone in Norwich cathedral cloister, so not in the chapel bit, and not during the service. Yet an older and higher cadet rate told them off because they weren't meant to be using it at all. And it wasn't because we were meant to be silent because someone was giving a speach as they had finished.

it's probably a matter of RESPECT
I'd say as a higer ranking cadet said they can't use their phone then the answer is, they can't use their phone.

not all rules are actually law you know!

I could understand what you're saying if it was during the service, but their stuff was at the place we stayed overnight and they were trying to arrange how and when to be picked up to be able to go to the place which had to be unlocked by someone with a key, and we weren't allowed outside of the cathedral. BTW I did stick up for this little cadet as they were panicking a bit and it wasn't very well organised.
The offending cadet should be keel-hauled and then made to stand at attention on the poop deck for eight bells.

Plus I was an equivilent rate to the cadet who told the little one off.
Might be the Hotline to God Molly !
Moreover, molly, you should be strung from the yard arm for aiding and abetting this mutinous behavior...So there!

It doesn't matter what rank the teller-off was, as bednobs says, you don't use your phone in a church.
At least not one with a roof
I think it is discourteous to use a mobile in the grounds of a church.

It disturbs the atmosphere of peace and contemplation for which a cloister was originally built, so I think it is more a matter of consideration for others, than actual law.

It wasn't very peaceful at all, there was a right rabble with everyone trying to get food.
Can we save a bit of time here.............?

What is the response you would prefer us to give, molly ?

I'm only standing up for the poor cadet. I was seeing if there was a strict rule saying you can't. I'm sure if there was, an instructor would have spotted him and quickly told them off, but they didn't.
Well, there you have it !

Next time you find yourself in the same set of circumstances you'll know what to do, won't you ?
It is not right carrying a mobile phone inside the cathedral. Just like in a public or private library bringing a cellphone can disturb other people.
