I sometimes turn the key and get no lights on the panel at all and complete silence. Then after a few goes the usual lights on the panel appear and the car starts normally. Is this due to a faulty connection somewhere? It cannot be the battery or it would not start at all and would probably show some sign of life or make some sort of noise! Once started the car runs fine.

give the battery terminals a clean with a wire brush if it carries on follow the wires and do the next connection and so on, one at a time until it fixes the problem, then you will know where the problem was for future reference.
The switch on the ignition barrel often fails. Not expensive and easy to replace.
