Old drawings

When I wasa kid (many years ago) I used to draw pictures of strange machines with things like, a boot on a hinge to move something or a funnel to guide a falling object etc etc. I was told recently that there was an artist who used to paint this kind of stuff, does anyone have a name that I can google?
