havng just received my council tax for next year i was reading the exemptions for payment and was amazed to read that one of them is if you go to prison you dont have to pay council tax, good eh!!!

How on earth would a prisoner pay? That only applies is the property is left empty because the sole occupier is in prison.

If the prisoner's family is occupying the property, then council tax is still payable.

oh right i didnt realise that if you go to prison it automatically means you dont have any money!!! dont be ridiculous, whats wrong with having to pay out of monies that you may have saved, my council tax is high enough without having to contribute for criminals. so tell me why are you only exempt for 6 months if the house is unoccupied and you are a law abiding citizen but as long as it takes when you are in nick??

it doesnt matter if its one or a 101 that live on thier own i dont see why they shouldnt be made to pay, i have to pay for mine and its not a pittance either

The criminals who aren't in prison but are living at home tagged probably don't pay it either.

They probably live on benefits and have it paid for them.

I'm a pensioner, pay too much income tax and far too much council tax for the services I receive (in my opinion) but life is too short to get into a tizz about things that either cannot be changed, or I am not prepared to try and change.

I do know that if a prisoner is a single occupier of council accommodation or housing association accommodation, he or she loses his home if the sentence is more than a proscribed length of time. And that's good enough for me.

well then ethel thats ok!!! but what if they are a home owner or in your world dont home owners turn to crime??? i pay more than my fair share of council tax so why should i subsidise cons???
