I'd like to know if it is a safe place for a young lady to be walking through on dark evenings this winter?

She may well find that the reality is scarier than she thought and soon turn to safer modes of transport.

I clearly remember being young and  not taking any notice of what my parents advised.  I was adventurous and did stupid things. Thinking  back, I can now appreciate how my parents must have worried.   All you can do LB is trust your daughter and hope some of it sinks in.  Its not easy being a parent!

Barmaid is right.

Thank you BM, I hadn't thought of that.  I just hope it isn't something too scary that moves her to do as you suggest.  I think we played it all wrong.  We should have said no don't get a bus or whatever, walk it, the exercise will do you good.  Then she's have got the bus.

Gulliver, please stop being silly, this is a serious thread.

Lottie, not my daughter, my granddaughter!!

When my daughter was my granddaughter's age she would have done as she was told.  She was a good girl.  Now, on a bad day, nearly everything I say is wrong;-)

Ladybirder  you're so right! X

I wasnt a bad girl, but I had a mind of my own and fortunately for me quite modern parents.  My son turned out to be the same as me - very independent.  But now he's 40 and I still worry about out him!

I should have read this properly.  I tend to speed.  Sorry I missed that is your granddaughter.

Speed read!

I forgive you;-)

My daughter used to scare the proverbial out of me.

She'd always walk home from wherever she'd been out with mates. Either along a main road from a rather notorious part of the city centre that had dance clubs, or from the more pubby student quarter. I recall one time she was walking across the city east to west...and messaging me about a shady character following on the other side of the road.

Yes, she's slways been very independent.

Oh...and she lived in some dodgy areas in her student  flat sharing days at UCL.

Pasta it happened to me, only it was TWO men.  I've told this on here before.  Must have been 16-17 years old.  Boyfriend abroad in the forces and his brothers and friends invited me for a drink and a meal one evening on the other side of our city. They offered to walk me home but I refused saying it was too far for them to go to mine and then back again.  Became aware of two men, one pushing a bicycle, on the opposite side of the main road chatting quietly to each other. When I had to turn off the main into a quiet dimly lit side road I was relieved when they turned in after me thinking they would rescue me if anything awful happened.  Not very far in there was a bombed site and as I started passing it one said to the other, "Now".  He grabbed me from behind and put a hand over my mouth and tried to pull me onto the bombed area. I jerked my head backwards and screamed HEEEELP.  Lights on in the houses and windows opened immediately.  They ran off.

Should I tell this to my GD?

Oh Pasta!  What happened re the dodgy character?  Did he stop following her or did she confront him?

Your granddaughter is an independant woman.

All you can do is advise her what has happened to you and to others that you know and get her some spray and perhaps sign her up to self defence classes

LB @ 11. 22  Tell that to RC @ 19.52 "Sauce for the Gander" get it?

My sister was attacked walking home after an argument.

she wasn’t so lucky, the bastiaard didn’t run off.

The main UCL campus is in Gower Street. Mile End is about five miles from there, so a tidy walk. A pleasant enough route through the City, past St Paul's Cathedral, the Bank of England and Leadenhall Street. Then you get to Aldgate, Whitechapel High Street and the Mile End Road. 😞

If she walks to Euston Square she can get to Mile End on one tube (Hammersmith & City Line, nine stops, about twenty minutes). Or a number 8 bus from Holborn to Bethnal Green and the D6 from there.

So sorry re your post David.  I won't ask for any details unless you want to give them.  I'd like to think this incident did not totally ruin her life and she has somehow managed to cope.  And the *** was caught and imprisoned.

I have this minute received a text that GD has finally agreed to get a bus from UCL and her flatmate/friend will meet her off the bus and they will walk home together. Sense at last.

Ladybirder...she just kept walking. Luckily it was through mostly residential streets...and she's got a confident air about her.

At the same age, I was living in Brooklyn...areas that were at the start of gentrification. I'd walk a couple miles home from work or from a nearby subway station and pass the local hookers. Dressed in 1970s skin tight latex 😮. I was wary...and never encountered any problems.  But it's a good thing my mother never knew!
