I just can't understand how she got away with it for so long. I wonder if they will try and get some of her pay back as she wasn't doing the job.

Back in my teaching days (long ago, when the school had a pet dinosaur), staff who'd been employed for more than a year or two could take up to 6 months sick leave per year on full pay. Given that teachers only work for 9-and-a-bit months each year anyway, that clearly left quite some scope for abuse of the system.

We had an English teacher who seemed to spend exactly 6 months in total off sick every year, on the grounds of 'stress', before she finally left for another job (no doubt with an excellent reference too, just to get rid of her!)
This is unbelievable. Don't they have OFSTED in Italy?
Roman Holiday?
