In the olden days, hippies didn't exist; there were Freaks, and there were Heads. Then came the days of Hippies and 'If you go to San Francisco..."
Anybody here old enough to remember the pre-Hippie era?

Mods and Rockers.
And of course Teddy Boys, then Mods and Rockers
Ooops, crossed there.
Beatnicks, Teddy Boys, Mods and Rockers. Started in the mid fifties. After hippies we had punks, New Romantics, etc.

I'm talkin' 'bout Heads an' Freaks! They was well after Teds, Beats, Mods an' Rockers! (Hippies to you Straights!)
Question Author
...an' well before Punks and New Romantics. (David Bowie had a lot to do with all that).
I'm talkin' 'bout Heads an' Freaks!

I've never heard of them, was it an American thing ?
Question Author
You forgot to mention Skinheads. First time I heard the term was in about 1965, and it was applied to Norman Foster (the architect), but it must have been around before that. Back to Teds - in those days knives (chivs) were all the rage - it's not a new thing.
Question Author
tonyav - it might have been american, but it was what they were called in London in my circle - 'Hippies' was certainly american. You're probably a bit young to remember the terminology from my era.
I would have loved to live in London in the 1960s. Alas, I was too young. I would rather have been in London than Frisco though
in London

Didn't spread out of London then, other wise I would have heard of them.
Yeh man I remember!

Mostly off my head and feeling freaky man.

Maydup - Hi Babe! How's it goin'?
Question Author
tonyav. Terminology tends to be localised both in time and space. 'Luv' is not always appreciated in London, and 'mate' is not always appreciated lsewhere.
Question Author
You have to be sensitive, as you can see in my reply to Maydup.

Remembering how we could all play guitar couldn't we?

Wowwwwww, far out man.
To far out for an ex skinhead, suede head, soul boy.
Question Author
Well, Maydup, I could, a bit, (enough to earn a living). (but not air guitar - that was pathetic). Anyway - sorry I was a bit familiar, but it was meant to be light-hearted. :-)
