I have just found an email in my spam box from a friend whose emails usually get through.

The address, after his username is, sugihjaylogistic.com ...not his address at all.

There was no message, just his name at the bottom of the space.

Is this some kind of scam?

Yes you’re the recipient so you’re the one who has to beware. It could be your contacts compromised or his, but it’s something almost certainly out of the control of either of you

It sounds as though his email has been hacked - don’t open it. I occasionally get emails like that (including one from a colleague who passed away several years ago).
Or it might be that someone else’s account has been hacked and they accessed his details from there?

Thanks, Toorak. I didn't open it. I deleted it as soon as I'd written the address down. I have sent him an email asking if he knows anything about it.

It's a strange looking address, isn't it?
Usually there is a link to some dodgy websites but maybe your spam filter has removed it. You can block it but you'll still get them from his name but with a different last bit of the user name.
I have received similar in the past from friends or family and it's always when their account has been hacked. You did right to let them now and then delete it.

Thank you, FF and Prudie. It will be interesting to see what he says about it.
Yes it is a scam - always check the whole address on e-mails.
The message has probably gone to all of the contacts in his address book.
'When in doubt, throw it out.'
Ancient proverb.
I’m friends with a young girl that used to be on here many years ago zzxxee?
And I’ve had a few emails of this nature to me saying it was her but when I’ve got in touch, it hasn’t been
P.S. Tell your friend to change his password on his mailing system (and perhaps ask him what the old one was, and check to see if it's an easily "guessable" one and if so advise him to use a stronger one.)

Thanks, Canary, I'll do that.
yes I get emails from people who have passed away. Its a good trick!
When this happens it’s not the case that the friend’s email address has been hacked, as many people think.
If it was, then the actual address would be the same. And there’d possibly be sent emails in their outbox.
It’s more likely that the spammer or virus spreader has been able to associate two known contacts somehow, as you’re more likely to open an email from someone you know.
Question Author
My friend has just confirmed that he didn't send an email to me yesterday.
Question Author
Ich, does he still need to change his password then?
Well, it’s always a good idea to change your password occasionally but no, he doesn’t actually need to
I agree- changing your password from time to time is always a good idea but won't stop more spam emails being sent out with your friend's name on. They are not coming from your friend. There will be no record of them in her address book.
Sorry, I meant to say there will be no record of them in her SENT folder
