For, against, or it's no one elses business what you do behind closed doors?

I don't see the issue with striking the bottom of your own infant. There is a difference between spanking a child, and then child abuse.

Yes, a slapped wrist, same thing! It's not the act of inflictign pain, it's the principle of bending a child over the knee, or forcing them to come to you whit their wrist out. I completely understand.

I was a adhd child myself, now proud adult with adhd and my siblings never got a smacked bottom, but I did, because i was a misbehaving loony. I don't see what other options my parents had in some instances apart from to slap my bottom and make me realise who is boss.
How many times were you smacked, spath?
I wonder how you'll feel if and when you have your own children?
I'd think most parents who've acted out of anger or frustration feel deep and lasting remorse. Inflicting pain is never right or justified.

HC, maybe 3 times in my life? The only one i can remember is as i was trying to run away getting gently clipped

Pasta, As i've said before, it's not about pain, it's the principle of controlling or dominating the child so they know to behave
Control and domination is not education, it only teaches bullying. The obvious difference between humans and wolves, is that we are able to speak and explain. I was spanked as a child, but didn't to my own children . And they are much better behaved lol. I did hit my daughter once when she was 15/16 (Adhd too) but I still feel bad about it now. I lost my temper and i suspect that taught her nothing other than people can be violent and irrational.
spath......most of the posters who want spanking defining are the one's that have never brought up children.
Those that have, do not require spanking to be defined.
Question Author
whip the belt out and make sure to at least emboss a "M&S" logo onto their backs

But in reality, this is the kind of thing i mean

What, Sqad?
Sqad.....one doesn't have to have brought up children to know that spanking is abuse.....x
Forgot to say welcome to AB, Mumn3boys...... :-)
gness...well there you go .....I disagree.
Question Author
if spanking was abuse then it would be illegal, surely? If it was consistent spanking for unfair reasons, then i'd agree it's abuse but justified spanking is justified. Yes some will say spanking is never justified, but that depends on who is justifying the action i guess
When 1 child is constantly jumping onto train lines & you have 2 others to control, a 'there there' wont save a disaster. Grab the offender, give him a hard pinch & order is restored.
Question Author
Can understand Tambo, and of course, spanking is very situational. I mean, kid won't go to bed straight away, doesn't justify a spank. The situation you just describes, yes that probably does. A hard pinch seems a tad malicious unless it's on the ear or arm but i understand your drift
And you'd be okay with your child's teacher doing that, tambo?
Question Author
I have previously mentioned, it's only acceptable from the childs parents, but in reality if my child was going to end up on a train line, then Yes give them a pinch, and a firm one until the train has passed
Question Author
I'm sure there would be much less paperwork from some minor assault than letting a child wander onto live train tracks putting their life at risk. No one would question someones motives in that situation i am sure
Spath, smacking your own children IS illegal in Scotland and Wales.

Look at this list of 53 countries where it is illega:
https://brilliantmaps.com/corporal-punishment/

Sweden was the first country to ban it in 1979
Question Author
because really.. it's the motive behind the spank that should be what is examined. If it is malicious intent, then i don't agree with it. If it's for the child's own good / ease then whats the harm.
Question Author
only recently in wales. But yes that was what sparked this discussion the welsh ban
