I think he just thought of himself as the Scottish Tony Benn.
A thoughtful and considered man. He raised an important question about the implications of devolution - that is, why Scottish mps should be able to vote on issues affecting England - that has still not been adequately resolved.
Like Tony Benn, completely flawed ideology, but thoroughly respected decent chap, I have no problem paying my respects.
RIP Tam.
He was our MP for most of my life. Seemed like decent guy.

He always seemed like a nice guy and had his head screwed on.

Douglas - you are lucky to have had him as an MP. We had Nicholas Fairbairn for some time. Strange, very strange, chap.
I remember Fairbairn. He inherited his seat from Sir Alec Douglas-Home. Bit of a nutter in my book.
Yes not somebody whose politics I agreed with but a thoroughly honourable and decent man (a rarity amongst politicians today). Shame he died before he (and the rest of us) received a satisfactory answer to his famous question – named by Enoch Powell after Mr Dalyell’s constituency - which he first asked almost forty years ago. A question which, with every step of greater devolution, seems ever more important.
Indeed!
My last post was to wolf re nf but also appropriate to nj
interesting article here: http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/tam-dalyell-still-asking-his-awkward-question-the-prophet-of-west-lothian-9802857.html
I'd largely forgotten how he stopped the first attempt at this Devolution sillyness. Pity he wasn't about later when Saint Tony was ruining the UK. We'd have been without the Wee un at least!
Yes, a decent man who spoke his truth and stood up for it. RIP
Stood for what he believed in. Even though I disagreed with his ideas that has to be respected in a man.
