(1) Look at the tile deeds and the information when you bought the house. (2) Check out local history in your public library. (3) Seek out your local Heritage Society and ask them for information. (4) Ask older residents for their memories. I know the history of my house by checking out above sources, and it didn't cost me a penny.
When we wanted to look at our deeds the building society wanted a �50 fee! We did'nt bother.
If the house is pre-1901, look up census returns and see who was living there.  One lady told me she lived in a smallish house that was not too big for her and her husband only.  She checked the 1881 census, and there was a family of (I think) eight plus a lodger!
