Why is Hampshire abbreviated to Hants and not Hamps ?

The county's original name was 'Hantsharing'.

Thank you, where does Hantsharing originate
My apologies for the mis-spelling...it should be Hantshaving. If you click here, that will link you to a web-page about county abbreviations. Scroll down to the section headed �Notes' and look at No. 5. Where exactly the word comes from or what it means I'm none too sure. Another connection is the alternative �old' name Hamptunshire...ie the shire of the town of (South)Hampton. Compare that with Northamptonshire, abbreviated as Northants.
