Father LeMarchand is interested in doing some genealogical research. Can anyone recommend any good sites to try? Will need (preferably) to be able to look into Burmese, French, Portuguese and Dutch as well as English ancestry! Thanks.

If you know the names of any relatives who were alive in 1901 then www.census.pro.gov.uk is really good. You have to pay (5 per session - each session lasts a maximum of 48 hours) but it's really interesting, you can actually view and print copies of the actual census records. I'm just starting my research and I've found it really useful.
UK only, of course. Sorry.

This is another good site. If you have a particular question you can go onto the message board and try your luck there. I've come up trumps a few times there. Actually got in touch with relatives I didn't know I had.

Good luck.

Thanx molly, I'm also very interested in geneology, so have printed out this page & will peruse these sites too.
Hi, again. Ive just thought of some more tips for you.

This site will allow you to search for wills and other useful documents.

You would also do well to find the nearest Family History Society to where youre looking. I have found them very useful indeed. They keep all sorts of records including census records and often gravestone inscriptions.

One other tip I would suggest is just to look for info on your search engine. I looked for census records Dumfries (my area) and found that the library there had put online the entire 1851 census records for the Dumfries and Galloway area. I also found some gravestone inscriptions and loads of other info.

Pity you werent looking in Scotland because you can log on to the General Records Office in Edinburgh and for a very reasonable fee you can download digital images of the actual records (B, M, D, Parish Record and Census records) The English equivalent is http://www.pro.gov.uk/online/default.htm Ive never used this site but I dont believe its as comprehensive as the Scottish site. But give them time they may well catch up.

I hope this has been of help. Sorry I don't know enough about the other countries to be of much help there.

Sorry that public records link looks a bit odd. It should be http://www.pro.gov.uk/online/docsonline.htm
Oh crikey! I'm an absolute idiot. Please ignore the last link. It should have been http://www.documentsonline.pro.gov.uk/about.asp
