i wait to be corrected but i'm pretty sure the original name was New Seal Land.
oops that should have read Sea Land.

Right, having googled i find that the country (having been named by the Dutch) was originally called Nieuw Zeeland (New Sealand) to go with New Holland (which is what Australia was originally known as). so there you go. Dunno if there ever was an original Sealand in Holland, the site seems to imply they simply called it that so the names sounded similar
Zeeland was a province in Holland...hence, the 'New' one 'way down under.

Sorry to be pedantic but Zeeland was (and still is) a province in the Netherlands as was Holland. Have a look at http://www.nationmaster.com/encyclopedia/Provinces
