Only just realised we have this new Christmas thread & erroneously posted elsewhere.

Do you think it's bad etiquette to e-mail Christmas letters & greetings to friends, especially those living overseas instead of sending a card? We have lots of overseas contacts and the cost of postage is becoming very expensive.

What does everybody else do?

Nah, it's just moving on with technology. Besides, it's less likely to get lost that way...and you can always send it again, because like you said, it saves on costs.

It's only seriously unacceptable if they don't have email.

I tend to send cards, but then everyone I know is in easy reach.
Personally I think that any electronic greetings cards are completely naff. If you don't like someone enough to spend a relatively small sum on postage then don't bother sending a greeting at all.

I heartily agree. I wouldn't dream of sending an electronic greetings card generated by a website.
I'm talking about sending an e-mailed personal letter instead of sticking it inside a Christmas card and sending it by post. It depends what you mean by a "relative small sum" on postage. If you have about 50 overseas cards to send by by air ail, each containing a two page letter, that's quite an expense on postage. (Unless you're a City banker, of course, to whom such sums would be trifling !)
I don't like the idea, seems so impersonal. A card at Christmas is part of Christmas spirit, both sending and receiving.
I don't agree with NH either about moving with the technology, what next.Text message?
If people are only acquaintances, then, okay, but definitely cards for friends
