The area is named after the 'Elephant and Castle' pub, which was converted from a smithy in the 18th Century. The smithy was related to the 'Cutlers Company' Trade Guild. This guild used the symbol of an elephant with a 'howdah' on its back (which looks a bit like a castle). 'Infanta de Castille' is (sadly) just a myth!
