Duddingston Loch (slightly different spelling, but the same one, I think) was known as the creadle of Scottish Curling from the 16th century. Duddingston Curling Society (mow departed) was formed in 1795 and was most important curling club in Scotland - not least because it laid down the first formal laws of the sport. There is a well-known painting, 'The Rev. Walker skating on Duddingston Loch' by Sir Henry Raeburn (1756-1823) which is in the National Gallery of Scotland.
