I think it'll work for 2014 but not 2015. UKIP have far too much ground to make up, I think they'd need to, what, quadruple their current support and improve on their 2012 result by maybe as much as twelve times more votes to stand a chance. I don't think that would happen for all the money in the world in an honest vote, too many people will stick to the two main parties. But maybe a significant dent in their support, and UKIP perhaps even as the new third party, is a real possibility.
Parties have always had rich backer who "bankroll" them (Labour have had the unions).
But it is very hard to buy an election.
UKIP have NO seats in the UK parliament at the moment, so I think it is impossible for any party to go from no seats to winning an election.
They may get a handful of seats in a general election, but no more.
Also, apart from Farage most of us could not name a single other member of UKIP, so they are almost a "single person" party.
Note I am not anti UKIP, I support a lot of what Farage says (the EU is a scandal) but you cant go from zero seats to winning an election in one go.

All that support for UKIP will help Labour to win in 2015. I am not being complacent but every vote for UKIP, will be a vote away from Dave. I fully expect UKIP will focus their attention in 2015 on Parliamentary seats that it thinks it can win from the Tories.

Given that it's the Sun that said "It was the Sun wot won it", I've always been sceptical about the claim. Tough to know, really.
I think Labour might lose some votes to UKIP too, though certainly not as many as the Tories would. UKIP looks to me like part of the trend of moving further and further away from a two-party system.

Tories have just two things going for them in my opinion.
1) the Economy is "appearing" to be looking up and "hopefully" the electorate will feel the benefit in 18months time and:
2) the adversaries will be Milliband and Ball which are not in the same league as Blair and Darling.
Still, as today looks like a Labour win or Hung Parliament.

Don't think the Sun ever won any election for anyone. The paper's editors are too canny to try. They ascertain what the public mood is and then endorse it.
Don't know whether the same rules apply in European elections, but in the General Election each candidate can only spend a very limited amount in campaigning, the Party is similarly controlled by reference to the number of candidates it has nationally, and all expenditure is counted from quite a long time before the date of the election, a rule necessary when the date of the election would only be known to the governing party.
So it is impossible for any one donor to 'buy' the election.

They may do quite well in the European one; they have several seats in the European Parliament already; because the election is in a form of proportional representation, whereby the winner is the least disliked, and the turnout is very low.
