On the buses, generally speaking, Ladies sit next to ladies and men sit next to men. Is this because ladies assume they may be harrassed if they go and sit next to a man and men assume they might look like they want to harrass a lady if they sit next to them when there are available 'man seats' on the bus?

i sit next to whoever looks the cleanest..be it male or female..i wouldnt have a problem sitting next to a man on a bus..the thought of anything happening would not cross my mind..as i have male friends that i treat the same as a female friend..i dont look on them as sex objects..perish the thought..i suppose some women that are lacking in confidence would rather sit by another female on the bus..as they feel safe...
My personal view is, that's EXACTLY the sub-conscious reason - but either people don't understand it or they're not prepared to admit it.
On the Central Line I sit on an end seat so that I can lean against the partition and read/nod off, regardless of whether it is a male or a female next to me.

sglazier,

Excuse me,but are you living in the Victorian Era?(or some strange transport planet).

I lived in London for many years, but certainly never experienced this.As oxeyedaisy says,if there are no empty seats you sit next to the most respectable looking person (not always a good thing! LOL) that you can see.

I wish buses were so empty that I was given a choice,I don't like standing!

No I am not, but I have always noticed this every time I catch the horse drawn Omnibus Carriage to work. Its like a sort of unwritten law or custom.

Its a charade I know, but then even queueing for a bus in London became extinct long ago.

It depends on the age of the man. Some young men sit with their legs so far apart, they take up more that half the leg room.  I feel different on trains than buses, for some reason, I think I'm probably a transport snob.
On most Glasgow buses I have to sit with my legs apart because there isn't enough room for my knees behind the seat in front.
