If the Govt said ... from now on, we wish to know where everyone is ... all the time ...

... there would be demonstrations on the streets.

(well, there were!!)

If Twitter say ... tell everyone where you are, all the time ...

... everyone thinks it's jolly, and trendy.

Do you carry and electronic ID card? ... or "Twitter" ... as they've managed to call it.

Neither.............
only jolly & trendy people use twitter, i am neither
Question Author
I don't, either.

Bit people who do seem to be solving the Govt's "keep a track on people's movements" problem.
Question Author
"But"
keeping tabs on jolly & trendy people is not a bad thing, the rest of us miserable sods can then steer clear of them
Question Author
Pseudo trendy people Tweet.

I don't know about genuinely trendy people.

And certainly not jolly people. They should be too busy being jolly to play with their phones.
''there would be demonstrations on the streets''

Because people's freedom of choice is taken away, unlike Twitter. In response to the original question: neither.
I'm with steg on this...............

Purely a question of cosmetic presentation, snags.

If the question is:

Would you agree to let us know your movements?

Answer: No, it infringes my liberty.

Would you pay for an expensive, fashionable device, to let us know your movements?

Answer: Yes, of course.

Do we feel manipulated?

If "ID Cards" had been called "Social Contact Cards" ... we'd all have them by now.
''Purely a question of cosmetic presentation, snags''

Well yes... but in people's mind's they are not being 'told' to Twitter...
No, I can see no point in Twittering, but I would have no objection to carrying an ID card.
Thinking about it, I'll take an ID card... stops me having to remember who I am... and great for scraping ice of the car windscreen...
Question Author
I also have no objection to ID Cards.

But I wonder how many "trendy" people, who objected to ID Cards, can't wait to tell people about every little facet of their lives, by Tweeting them !
I Suggest you don't install google latitude on your phone then.
That's probably because they believe that they still have some control over 'what' information is conveyed to the wider world...
Question Author
Anyone who believes they have any tiny degree of control over what information is collected about them has not read The Silent State by Heather Brooke (she who exposed the MP's expenses fiddles).
Question Author
I don't think you can "install" ANYTHING on my phone !!
-- answer removed --
I didn't say 'collected'............I said 'conveyed'..........
Following big ben on twitter was vaguely amusing for a few hours but you very quickly get bored of seeing "BONG BONG BONG" tweets.
