Hello everyone, can someone please tell me what has happened to the underskirt (petticoat).  This beautiful item of female attire seems to have all but disappeared from the modern woman's clothing.  They are such wonderful garments, so sensual etc.

Nothing as far as I know.
You can still buy them in most shops that sell underwear.
Surely the sensuality is from the fabric not the garment. Cotton slips not really sensual but silk slips are.

i agree that silk or satin are wonderul fabrics, but that hint of white peeping from the bottom of a skirt is a great buzz for a lot of men.  it is a shame that younger women have not tuned into that - erica

I would say the opposite, I don't think slips are attractive at all.  I'm 22 and all they remind me of is my nan.  My mum is mid 40's and she doesn't wear them.  I think the material is sensual, but so would a pair of Y-fronts be if they were made out of satin/ silk.

I think the fact that you can only buy them in places like BHS or M&S kind of suggests that it's more the older generation (50/60+) that likes them.

Exactly the point i was trying to make, thanks Natalie
I remember my mum used to make me wear one under my school uniform when I was very young (she said it would keep me warm) and I hated them.  They just got in the way and felt uncomfortable.  As far as the modern woman goes, theyre simply a superfluous item of underwear.  Women today tend to live in trousers and jeans.  The skirts I wear for the office and going out are either lined or made of sufficiently thick material so as not be see through so to wear anything underneath is unnecessary (plus I think my boyfriend would laugh me out of the bedroom). It's definitely an older woman's item of underwear as Natalie said.

Well Miss Zippy it's fine if your skirt is lined, but if not, a slip will make it hang much better, as well as possibly providing warmth, opacity and even absorbency! I often see people in clingy skirts showing every bulge & seam and wonder if they have any idea what they look like from the back, and how much better they'd look with a slip! So my reasons are mainlly practical.
I'd rather attractive women just wore short and tight miniskirts, minus knickers. Nice one.

Natalie1982.  I am in the older generation, in fact not far off retiring and I hate petticoats.  They just look stupid under my jeans!  If I really, really, have to wear a skirt (about once a year) I wear a lined one.

I can't bear to think of going back to skirts and petticoats and tights or stockings.  Long live jeans - I shall wear them until I am 90.

And my mum is 84 and I haven't seen her in a skirt for years either!

Didn't mean to cause offence FP!  One of my nan's wears them under her skirts, the other lives in jeans!  They are both in their 70's.

I'd go with Miss Zippy's answer, we just don't need them any more.  Plus, if I did wear one I' d probably still be single.

Solarjunkie, absorbancy to what exactly?  I think that may be another whole issue altogether.  Tena-Lady anyone?
No offence taken, Natalie
Would a Scottish man wear a petticoat under his kilt?
As far as I am concerned, a petticoat is a must. Yes they feel oh so sensual, and they are also very practical, but those who dont wear them are really missing out, more fool them!! We all spend fortunes on lingerie and why......because it makes us feel great, so why not a petticoat as well? I have cheaper ones for everyday use, and more expensive ones for those special nights. They haven't disappeared, they've just been covered up!

oh thank you Paula - glad to see that someone agrees with my feelings about underskirts. they do so improve the shape of what we are wearing and i find that they make me feel so good about myself as a result.

i fully understand what you say about spending a large amount of money on lingerie to look and feel good and it seems a shame not to complete the whole package with a nice underskirt - come to think of it i would never wear stockings without one and maybe even a corset too (lol) - erica
