Some sound advice here.
Look out for 'Treasure Hunting Magazine', which has 'how to...' for beginners, and reviews on metal detectors.
Perhaps you could also contact a (responsible!) local club and have a chat with the members. Chances are some of them might have an extra detector, and would let you use it on one of their outings.
