So I've over £100 worth of clothes to go back to Topshop but i've lost the receipt. They won't do a gift card, only an exchange and there is nothing in store I want. If I take back my dresses and buy, say £150 worth of clothes and put extra charges on debit card, then return all the new things, will all the money go back onto my debit card, or just the extra amount?

How can you buy £150 worth of clothes if there is nothing in store that you want?
Question Author
Because if i'm returning it all and getting £150 back I don't care if it looks rubbish!
I think she means she could buy the clothes then return the new clothes and get the full amount of money back so the original receipt going missing wouldn't matter.
The store should annotate your purchase receipt with "No Original Receipt" - then in theory only the amount over the value of the returned goods (£100) should be put on to the debit card.

Having said that It is quite unusual for a store not to issue a refund in gift vouchers/card to a customer with no original receipt . it might be worth pursuing the point or checking with the company's HO.
Did you make your original purchases on your debit card as this can as act as proof of purchase.
were they sale items, and you're saying you bought them at the original prices?

Yes, I used debit card (an O2 money one, so I can pinpoint exact time of transaction but have no statement). I also bought other things at the time that I've kept- would this not mean they have no way of proving it's the same transaction?

They won't give me a gift card because it could be used in other stores- they have an exchange only policy without refund (which bothers me incase items are reduced in price).
Question Author
@Sara- no, the items were full price but I've lost the receipt. I can only get an exchange in store, no credit note or refund.
Topshop offers a friendly refund policy: keep the receipt and you can return for your money back within 28 days of the purchase.
Without a receipt, an exchange is offered.

You are very lucky they are offering an exchange. They are not legally obliged to do even that without the receipt.
By law the shop doesn't have to give a refund, exchange, credit note or anything else just because you change your mind. That is down to individual shop policy. Their policy is no exchange without receipt so they are being more than generous.

The store insists on proof of purchase because it is all too easy to return shoplifted goods for a cash 'refund'.
strange policy. I'm surprised they can't write a credit note with a "this store only" note on it.

you might want to call their head office to check they're getting it right.

@Sara3, it's not specific to the branch, but the credit note could be used in other arcadia stores so there could be a deficit in money/stock.

@hc4361 Thanks for the lecture on consumer law, wasn't *really* what I asked about though. I've got items I don't want, yes, my fault (although Toppers should have enough staff for changing rooms so I didn't have to run the risk) but since they are kind enough to offer me a exchange I would like to know i'm spending a fair amount of money on something I want, rather than panic buying in case my current items are reduced in price. I was simply asking if there was a way around the gift card/refund problem.
I work in a topshop and it is true that they dont usually do money back on giftcard because they can be used in other arcadia stores. Topshop do have warehouse search option instore so maybe check the internet for things you like and see if they can order them in for you? By the way how long ago did you buy these items that you want to return?
