my son has an XBox 360 and due to the hardwear failure it is being replaced FREE of charge, but he has to send it to the manuctureres using UPS and the nearest depot is in manchester (Salford) according to the internet site, that means he has to travel 30 miles or so to drop it off, is there no easier way to get the thing back to them? (whoever they are he is sending it to)

If the manufacturer has specified a carrier, I assume that they've got an account with UPS and that they'll pay for the carriage. UPS collect as well as deliver, so phone 08457-877-877 to see if they'll collect from a convenient location and send the bill to the manufacturer.
