Installing a new mouse for pc

I have just aquired a new A4 tech MOP-18 mouse for my pc. It has a USB connection which is different from the mouse connection that I use currently - I think the one I'm using now has a PS/2 connection (or something like that). Anyway I've plugged this new mouse in the back of my pc and unplugged the old one. My PC recognised something and it asked me to restart and then put in the windows 98 disc etc but the new mouse didn't work. Can anyone tell me how to install it properly please. Do I have to install drivers for it? Don't have a disc with the mouse - just the mouse itself. No instructions either.

My pc is a few years old now and has windows 98 SE. So therefore it doesn't detect new software automatically. Thanks in advance.

I think Windows 98 support for a USB port was not very good.

Your best bet may be to buy a USB to PS/2 converter.

Plug the mouse into that, then that into the PS/2 port.

Somewhere like Maplins should sell one.

Did your mouse come with a driver disk? Windows 98SE doesn't support USB too well and will need a driver. You could try downloading one from the internet.
oops

I doubt it's anything to do with USB - other than a lack of correct drivers
Of all the 98s SE is best able to use usb

but .... the mouse is dated 2003 ... 98 is ... well 98 (97 actually) so yes you need drivers ... esp for a usb device
(something to bear in mind if you buy a memory stick or external HDD)

install the driver ... reboot (without old mouse) insert new mouse
