After 28 years my two favourite utensils are worn down by at least an inch each - have we consumed this wood? I admit that, having two dogs, everything I cook contains some hair of the dog, but splinters..............

I have the same problem! Probably quite common! I reckon more bits come off when you scrub them than cook. I hope anyway!
Hmm i've got this but it has the look of something that has worn away smooth as opposed to a splinter. Overall even if we are consuming a 28th of an inch a year of wood it's surely no big deal...and rather wood than say, teflon!
I remember as a child, my Mum & her mum would mix in a giant bowl - it was about a yard across [honest] - enough Christmas pudding mix to fill about a dozen puds. It was a family tradition, everyone had to stir it and make a wish. One year my mum noticed a sizeable chunk [about the size of an adult's front tooth] missing from the wooden spoon. This was after she'd filled about 10 bowls. As the mixture had whole almonds in it, it was very difficult to find it. After spending about four hours searching for it she gave up. Dad came home from work, she relayed the tale explaining dinner would be late etc. My Dad replied [in a I didn't engage my brain before speaking way] - "Oh I saw that bit floating in the washing up bowl last night didn't I tell you?" How he didn't get brained I'll never know!
