the hairdresser usually. As far as I know, as my mum is a hairdresser, all tips go in a jar and is split, but best to give it to the person that ACTUALLY done the job.

Good question. I find that sometimes I'd really like to tip the person who does my shampoo more than tip the hairdresser. A good head massage really makes the visit! However, time and again, I've gone to pay and it's the hairdresser who loiters by the till waiting to see if you're going to give them anything extra. Then again, I loathe seeing some of these juniors (and hairdressers) do nothing but back bite each other (recently stopped going to a salon because of this) and wouldn't want to have my tip split and given to them.

Many salons rent their chairs which means each hairdresser is self employed and their tips are theirs and nothing is split. It's difficult to know what money goes where.

As for how much... no idea. For me, it's generally if I've any coins left in my purse and sometimes it's simply down to that.

i dont tip any more it costs enough to go to the hairdresser as it is

I usually give a 1 for a wet trim & 50p for a dry trim.

The age-old dilema of the British!

Why not hand 20% to the stylist and 10% to the junior who washed your hair for you?

Alternatively, if you use the same hairdresser regulalry, don;t tip, and buy a gift at Christmas instead.

I usually give a 2 tip when getting my hair highlighted as it takes a long time and must be really boring for the hairdresser.

Oh andy-hughes how I'd love to be able to afford to give a 20% tip. For a cut and highlights it costs nearly 80 - a 16 tip is generous under any circumstances. However, given that these 10-20% figures are generally bandied around in terms of tipping it's easy to see why the amount to tip is so difficult when you're paying so much in the first place!

ace - they get bored? thats their job, its what they are there for! lots of jobs are boring, who cares, why should we pay them extra for a job they are probably being well paid for anyway?

Well i got my hair done today at Toni & Guy i might add and it cost 87 in total for a T-section of highlights and a re-style and if i do say so myself it looks great! So i tipped both my colourist and stylist 2.50 each. Quite fair and reasonable i think. Thanks to you all for your advice on the subject.
